September is T day as Sony Ericsson prepares to invade T-Mobile with its first headset in years. Currently exclusive to AT&T, T-Mobile will be offering the Sony Ericsson TM506 which happens to be T-Mobiles first HSDPA handset. Clocking in with a 2 Megapixel, this flip phone is a fairly standard tri-band GSM phone with 3G. Also hosting Bluetooth 2.0 and camcorder, enabling it for video messaging (Video Calling is not mentioned). Also standard is GPS, coming in either Black or Green. Pricing is not yet announced but look for them in a T-Mobile store on September 3rd.
Making a return to T-Mobile is a good first step for the troubled division of Sony who has been having a tough year with hopes of breaking even (as opposed to losing like Q1) in Q2 of 2008. Yes exclusives can have its benefit and I’m sure AT&T has accommodated Sony but at some point, there is only so much one carrier can offer. Diversifying their carrier from just AT&T to T-Mobile (and maybe Verizon in the future) only means that more consumers have access to Sony products and don’t have to switch carriers, just because they want a phone as many just don’t. This in the end run turns into a win win for Sony. Hopefully this puts Sony Ericsson on track to return to profitability and is a positive first move.
