SonyDeals: $100 of Mylo 2, Just In Time For The Holiday [expired]

 

Who loves you for your Gadget Buying habits? I do and it seems tha Sony does too! Just in time the Recession Holiday, Sony is taking a $100 of the Mylo 2 units that launched last January. The rebate is good on both the Black and White model and offer is good till January 31st, 2009. So for those who have been wanting one or are a fan of Internet Devices, this is a fantastic deal.

My personal opinion on the matter is different though. While I have played around with a Mylo 2 before and find them to be great and fun little devices, I cant help but think why. For the fantastic piece that it is, it never quite gets there. Who is it being aimed at? If its college kids on campus and they already have an iPhone or Sidekick. Why would they want to have another “Web Device”. If its more media purpose, then Sonys own PSP is a much better device. Now a PSP+Mylo fusion or a Mylo with a cell carrier, thats a whole new and exciting product. Plus, people don’t want to carry around 5 different products. Thats why the iPhone is hugely popular and for the same reason, the PDA eventually died and became the now SmartPhone. Its with this mindset that I cant help but think, yes the Mylo is great and a quality product, but where is the market for it? You either have to go make a market for it or release a product in an existing, competitive market. You cannot just release it and forget it. And this brings me to that I cannot help but think, the money that went into the R&D of this product and production and distribution, could it not be better spent on where Sony is fighting the major battles? Blu-ray and of course the PS3 and its HDTV’s. Take that $100 million and advertise the hell out of PS3 that links directly to Blu-ray and then HDTV’s and many other Sony products. Because if there is one thing I believe in, its that for all the products Sony offers, there is no marketing strategy behind them whatsoever and thats partially because of being cash stripped and what better way to get some cash, then to cut product lines that don’t really need to exist.
