Sony Xperia Smartphones Have Extremely Low Retention Rate

It appears that making a world class smartphone and selling a world class smartphone are two very different things. According to a new survey among 3,000 people in the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia, the number one smartphone on their list was the iPhone. In fact, a whopping 76% of them would purchase a phone from Apple again. While making every phone design possible with screen sizes aimed at infant to giants, Samsung has stayed a distant second with 58% retention rate among consumers.

For Sony, things weren’t nearly as rosy, despite the companies growth in the mobile sector, resulting in the company not being able to place in the top 5 and quite aways away from the market leaders.

As the survey indicates, Sony placed at number six from the eight top leading brands for customer retention with just 24% opting to buy again. The results are as follows:

  1. Apple – 76%
  2. Samsung – 58%
  3. LG – 37%
  4. Nokia – 33%
  5. HTC – 30%
  6. Sony – 24%
  7. Motorla – 22%
  8. Blackberry – 21%

The most alarming part about this is that Sony barely did better than Blackberry which as far as mainstream consumers are concerned is a dead brand. Sony has been heavily investing in mobile, having just release their latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z2 which features ground breaking technology like 4K video recording. Sony has stated that they want to stay aggressive in the mobile landscape and to that end, plan on continuing their strategy of releasing a new flagship smartphone every 6 months.

With the above results, it may be time for Sony to rethink their strategy?
