Bungie Unclear if ‘Destiny Beta’ Progress Will Carry to Full Game

The highly anticipated Destiny beta will kickoff this Thursday, giving gamers one more chance to jump into the massive world built by Bungie before its official release. Previously, PlayStation 4 owners had exclusive access to the Destiny alpha which only gave them a glimpse of what’s to come. The Destiny beta on the other hand will be much more expansive which begs the question. When Destiny launches on September 9th, will the progress attained during the beta carry over to the full game or will we have to start our characters all over?

The answer from Bungie? Unclear. Let us explain.

David Dague, Community Manager at Bungie had this to say:

The beta is a test. It’s extremely unknown as to what the outcome will be. So, it’s certainly not a promise or an announcement that we’re making at this time. It all depends on what we learn and how things shake out. So, we’re certainly not telling players they can carry their progress over, but we haven’t made any announcements either way.

So we reserve the right to talk about that later.

While not the answer we’re looking for, it’s not all that surprising either. Bungie wants to use the Destiny Beta to get a real feel on how their universe will hold when thousands of players begin to play. With so many extra players online and hammering those servers (something that cannot be truly recreated with internal tests), Bungie will get a real understanding of what works in their game and what doesn’t. Are some weapons too weak while others too powerful? Are there loopholes in quests that are unfairly allowing some to progress and push ahead?

Once those questions are answered, it seems like Bungie will take a step back and determine if your progress from the beta will carry over to the full game or not. After all, it would be unfair for players to discover loopholes/flaws, progress ahead, and be allowed to keep what they gained after Bungie decides to address the flaws/balances while everyone else will start at zero when the game officially launches.

Discuss:

Should Bungie allow those who participate in the Destiny beta to keep their progress?
