Sony Xperia Z2 Now Available for Purchase in United States

Sony Xperia Z2

Good news for those who are looking for a Android phone that starts with the other S. While the Sony Xperia Z2 has been available throughout the world for nearly 6 months, US fans had been left in the cold. Luckily Sony has began to figure out its US strategy a bit and recently released the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet exclusively on Verizon. Ok maybe not the best idea to go with a sole carrier but at least it’s being sold in the US.

So lets talk Xperia Z2 and the US.

Despite teasing us with an Xperia Z2 barring the Verizon logo not once but twice, it seems that the Xperia Z2 that’s made it to the US comes with no carrier support. Much like the Xperia Z1 Compact that was also announced for the US earlier this month with no carrier support, the Xperia Z2 will also arrive with no carrier partner. The good news is that you won’t have to deal with a two year contract. That does come with a price. Literally.

Like all unlocked devices, it means that you get to pay full price for the phone which is pegged at $699. Humorously, the phone is actually priced at $749 according to Sony but it’s currently giving you a price break so there is that right? Those who are looking to pull the trigger will simply need their credit card when they decide between the black, purple, and white model.

It’s worth pointing out that most flagship smartphones that come unlocked carry a similar price tag. It’s just that unlike say Apple which commands a mindshare and brand following, Sony has virtually none of that in the US. This means the Xperia Z2 is for the most hardcore of Sony fans and I’m not sure there are enough of them to justify launching the phone. Then again, I’m sure somebody at Sony crunched the numbers right?

The Xperia Z2 will be compatible on AT&T and T-Mobile’s network and can be purchased from Sony’s online store.

Discuss:

Is the Sony Xperia Z2 even worth releasing in the US if it’s only offered at full price?
