During IFA 2013, Sony introduced the first main stream attachable smartphone lens. The QX10 and QX100 allows iOS and Android users to latch on an attachable lens to their smartphone (or tablet) and gain a higher megapixel camera with a larger sensor. With Sony taking the stage on Wednesday, September 3rd at the 2014 IFA, it’s believed that the company will once again unveil another set of QX lenses with a very worth improvement.

Thanks to the Korean RRA (National Radio Research Agency) where the Sony DSC-QX30 registration first appeared, its looking fairly definitive that Sony will be bringing at least one smartphone lens to IFA 2014. Specifically, the Sony DSC-QX30, and if the naming is any indication, it will feature 3ox optical zoom. Currently the QX10 (pictured above) and QX100 offer either 10x optical zoom or a fixed focal length. The ability to bring 30x optical zoom to a smartphone will go a long way towards justifying the purchase of the attachable smartphone lens that can truly offer something beneficial and not just an increase of megapixels.

With IFA 2014 less than a month away, we won’t have to wait long to hear about Sony’s mobile ambitions.
