Reaffirming their seriousness on wearables, Sony today announced the SmartWatch 3. Technically the 5th iteration to come from Sony, the SmartWatch 3 is the first of its kind from Sony that ditches the company’s own custom software in favor of Android Wear, the latest from Google which was announced over the summer. As you’d expect, the SmartWatch 3 can sync notifications from a compatible Android device. Thanks to the onboard 4GB memory, the Sony SmartWatch 3 can also store and playback music via Bluetooth without any tethering.

According to Sony, the SmartWatch 3 can last for for two days (four days on standby) and charges via micro-USB. While Sony may have ditched their own custom software on the device end, the SmartWatch 3 will still fully utilize Sony’s LifeLog app that tracks your daily information. Unlike previous entries, this time around, Sony has gone for a sporty, rugged design which incorporates a steel-backed case with interchangeable silicon straps. Once released, the Sony SmartWatch 3 will be available in Classic (Black) and Sport (Lime) editions, with extra color straps available in Pink and White after launch.

Thanks to Android Wear, you can get messages from your friends, appointment notifications, and weather updates among other things like flight information, tips based on your interests, or messages from other apps that support Android Wear. Thanks to the built-in mic, you can also use your voice for search.

Sony has set a 229.99 price for Europe with availability expected in fall. No word yet on when these might make their way to the US.
