IFA 2014: PS4 Remote Play Coming To Xperia Z3, Compact, Tablet

At Sony’s IFA 2014 event, the new line of Xperia smartphones and tablets, the Z3 line, was officially revealed. Along with the usual upgrades and refinements, Sony announced the Z3, Z3 Compact, and Z3 Tablet would be the first Sony Mobile devices to feature the ability to use PlayStation 4 Remote Play streaming.

Remote Play had until now only been available on PlayStation Vita devices, which could stream your PS4 gameplay over a shared WiFi connection or, in some cases, over separate wireless connections if they were strong enough. The Z3 line of devices will be able to use Remote Play, but currently only over a strong, shared WiFi connection.

BwnhYXjCIAEhWKbIn order to make Remote Play possible over these brand new mobile devices, Sony also revealed an official mount for the DualShock 4 controller, the GCM10 Game Control Mount. No word on whether the GCM10, or some similar device, will be possible for Vita Remote Play as well. Just based on the mount’s design, attached to the back of the device, it’s likely that use with the Vita would be hindered due to the rear touch mirroring used for some games over Remote Play.

While the devices are set to launch later this fall, the Remote Play functionality will not be live until sometime in November. There are no plans to bring Remote Play to any other Xperia devices at this time, nor to other Android or iOS smartphones and tablets.
