Tablets are all the rave these days. Ask Apple and they’ll proudly reveal that iPad is their fastest selling product in history. Digging a bit further into what has fueled growth for iPad will reveal when Apple introduced the iPad mini that offers a 7.9-inch display. Not only is the iPad mini lighter and easier to use with one hand, but it also carries a lower price tag than the iPad (now iPad Air), which helps break down barriers. Enter the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Forget for a minute how horrible the name is and instead focus on what Sony calls the “world’s slimmest at 6.4mm and lightest (270g or 0.6lbs) compact tablet” has to offer.

We reveal all there is to know about the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact after the jump.

Calum MacDougall, Director of Product Marketing Programme at Sony Mobile Communications:

Following on from the success of our award-winning Xperia Z2 Tablet, we’re continuing to expand our tablet portfolio with the launch of the no-compromise compact tablet. Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact pushes the boundaries of technology innovation by bringing our flagship Z3 series features in a compact size, continuing our new standard of offering premium experiences in a choice of form factor for consumers

As the name suggests, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is smaller than the company’s traditional line of tablets. To that end, Sony has outfitted the Z3 Tablet Compact with a 8inch TRILUMINOS screen with Live Color LED technology that delivers in 1080p. Powering all of this is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.5 GHz quad-core CPUs and 3GB RAM. Knowing full well our photo habits, the Z3 Tablet Compact also packs a 8.1-megapixel rear camera and a 2.2-megapixel front shooter. Housing all of this is a waterproof and dust-tight (IP65/68) casing that lets you easily wash your tablet when dirty or more appropriately, not freak out when your drink spills on it. For those who always come up with their best ideas in the shower, you now have a solution.

Despite its compact nature, Sony is promising 13 hours of video playback, thanks to its STAMINA mode which helps turn off unused features automatically. Another unique feature of the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is PS4 Remote Play (outlined here) which not only allows you to control your PS4 games, but to actually stream the entire PS4 experience onto your tablet. This can be quite the feature for households that only have one TV. If that’s not enough, Sony will also sell a DualShock 4 mount that will allow you to connect the Z3 Tablet Compact to a DS4 controller for maximum accuracy while playing.

While Sony has yet to reveal pricing or an exact launch date outside of this fall, we’ve been told that there will be both Wi-Fi only and LTE models in white and black.
