Xperia M2 Glossy

Bored of the last KitKat upgrade? Xperia M2, Aqua users looking for a new update are in luck.

For most users who are keeping their M2 phone updated, we’re running on build version 18.3.C.0.39 (or a variation of it) which was released back in August, bringing KitKat 4.4 including an updated white-icon UI, new apps, camera features, audio tunnelling and a few more tweaks.

So update 18.3.1.C.0.21 is beginning to roll. So far, no other Xperia site seems to list (even comments) what’s in this update. We know. Read on to find out first…You can see that this update was registered just a few days ago…

Xperia M2 Update, M2 Aqua Rolling…

Various countries/carriers/networks are rolling this out now. The best thing to do is to connect your phone to your computer and find out directly.

PC Companion (Windows) or Bridge for MAC (…MAC)

As we’ve seen from Sony updates (and other brands), different countries receive the updates at different times, mostly related to how quickly a carrier approves the update. So you might want to check your phone once a day if you’re really keen on this update.

The new update is not even listed on the official M2 page yet. For those of us that are comfortable with some serious phone-modding, the usual Xperia firmware updaters have .FTF files of the 18.3.1.C.0.21 available right now.

I’m about to test this myself and will report back with changes…

Update – What about changes on Google’s Android side?

Android 4.4 Google

Many of the changes from 4.4.1 to 4.4.4 aren’t relevant to our device e.g. Nexus updates. There doesn’t appear to be much significant (though a tiny .4 jump wouldn’t suggest big changes anyway). So, the real update is likely going to be on the Sony side. Updated app versions for sure, if any bugs were outstanding, they’re likely fixed. No major UI changes noted yet.

Also note, that previous phone backups become invalid after this update. So, consider backup up before making any changes as an option if you decided to return to that build. You will have to manually restore everything after updating to 4.4.4.

Update 2 – Want to know what Sony put in this update?

Sony has still not listed this under the software updates on their M2/Aqua pages. But since we know that it’s 4.4.4…we can 99.9% say that this is what’s included (REMEMBER WE BREAK THIS NEWS FIRST!):

CaptureDoes that say Xperia Z? Yep. But that just got updated to 4.4.4. Probably more than 99% of what’s in that is the new M2 update, which we have confirmed is 4.4.4. Mystery over!

Personally noted changes:

  • Audio playback in Walkman seems to be WAY louder
  • Xperia answer machine (inbuilt voicemail) or way that already available on 4.4.2?
  • Walkman background has changed
