5 Films Leaked from Sony Pictures After Hacking Incident

Exactly a week ago, Sony Pictures network was completely compromised by a group of hackers known as #GOP. While not a lot is known about the group, ‘Guardians of Peace’ claims that they want ‘equality’ for employees. In addition to crippling Sony Pictures internal networks which meant internet among other things, the group claimed to have taken sensitive data from the studio. #GOP threatened that unless SP would met their demands, they would release “damning” information on the company.

While that did not or has not yet come to fruition, over the last few days, five movies from Sony Picture have leaked online, including 4 unreleased titles.

It’s unclear if the leaks in question have anything to do with #GOP though things line up far too perfectly for it to be coincidence. At any rate, over the last few days, five films from Sony Pictures have leaked on different file-sharing sites including Fury, the World War II flick starring Brad Pitt which is still in theaters. At the time of this article, Fury has been downloaded a whopping 1.2 million times.

The four other titles leaked online may be even more damaging for Sony Pictures as they are unreleased films. They include Annie, Still Alice, Mr. Turner, and To Write Love on Her Arms. While not as many downloads as Fury which is fairly typical since films like Annie are usually enjoyed by the family and thus, less prone to illegal downloads, they’re still seeing their own fair share of hits. Downloads for each films include:

  • Fury – 1.2 million
  • Annie – 206,000
  • Still Alice – 103,832
  • Mr. Turner – 63,379
  • To Write Love on Her Arms – 19,946

In the case of Fury, it seems as if the theatrical cut of the film has leaked while the other four titles are DVD screeners which are watermarked. A spokesman from SP had this to say:

The theft of Sony Pictures Entertainment content is a criminal matter, and we are working closely with law enforcement to address it

Sony Pictures will next release Annie in theaters on Christmas day.

Do you think leaked versions of films hurt a film’s box office gross?
