Depending on if you’re a cup half full or half empty kind of person, the following news can taken in two different ways. During the holiday season which is also the most important time of the year for retailers, Sony Mobile products were the 4th most activated new mobile devices. While bested by rivals Apple, Samsung, and Nokia, Sony was able to slightly edge out LG while completely leaving others like Motorola, HTC, and Blackberry in the dust.

Now comes the cup half full or empty part.

As you can see from the chart above, while Sony Mobile did rank in the top 5 most activated devices by taking the number 4 spot, there is quite a large gap between even first and second place, and where Sony finished. New mobile device activation by manufacturers:

  1. Apple – 51.3%
  2. Samsung – 17.7%
  3. Nokia – 5.8%
  4. Sony – 1.6%
  5. LG – 1.4%

From Flurry:

To put this in perspective, for every Samsung devices that was activated, Apple activated 2.9 devices. For every Microsoft Lumia device activated, Apple activated 8.8 devices.

While far from the market leaders, it’s still impressive if not important that Sony was at least able to show up in the top 5, seeing how brands like Motorola (Droid smartphones) spend a lot more money than Sony does when it comes to advertising. It’s also worth iterating that this is purely looking at mobile devices which include smartphones and tablets and has no bearing on Sony’s other divisions which include PlayStation, televisions, cameras, and more.

Despite what can be seen as a positive for the company, Sony has announced that they plan on focusing less on mobile and more on PlayStation after the enormous loss the division is expected to post.
