PlayStation Vita: Difference Between YouTube on Browser vs. Now Defunct App

PlayStation_Vita_YouTube

It was revealed yesterday that the PlayStation Vita would soon have a few less apps for you to choose from and use. Specifically, Maps, Near, and YouTube will be phased out in the next few months. Alongside those apps, Sony also announced the end of Music Unlimited, their music streaming app, on all platforms. While Maps and Near won’t have a replacement on the PlayStation Vita (click here to see why their disappearance from the Vita isn’t really a big deal), YouTube will surely be missed. Luckily, Vita owners will still be able to visit YouTube via the Vita browser, but there are some differences in functionality.

After the jump, we give you the break down of YouTube on Vita’s web browser vs. the app.

Features that will remain the same

  • Video quality (plays video in high-quality)
  • Video content (you cannot watch titles with ads on both the YouTube app and the Browser)
  • Create/add playlists
  • Subscribe to channels

Features unavailable via Browser:

  • Cannot select other content if users are already playing a video
  • Page reloads every time a user switches pages
  • Cannot change the video quality while playing a video (you can change the quality before playing the video)
  • Cannot put videos on repeat

Features available only via Browser:

  • The search box gives search suggestions

While something are a bit more hassle, the core functionality of YouTube is luckily fully in tact and you’ll still be able to find your subscriptions with ease. Search is also improved, which is a nice plus since content discovery is ever so important when it comes to YouTube. It still remains unclear why support for the YouTube app is ending on Vita.
