No Sony Press Conference at MWC 2015?

According to a rumor, Sony will not be holding their traditional press conference and accompanying live stream during MWC 2015. Set to take place in Barcelona March 2nd through the 5th, Mobile World Congress is at its heart like CES but with a specific focus on mobile. In the past, Sony has used the event to launch to flagship smartphones and tablets. So what can we expect from the event? Meet us after the jump.

We’d already revealed some time ago that Sony likely wouldn’t be launching a flagship smartphone, presumably what will be the Xperia Z4 at MWC 2015. It’s been believed that Sony wants to hold a private event to reveal the device sometime in the late Spring to mid Summer time frame. Still, we had all assumed that Sony would still attend and hold a press conference at MWC and use it as an opportunity to once again highlight the Xperia Z3. After all, the flagship smartphone only launched in the US in October and has quite a bit of horsepower to spare. With Android 5.0 Lollipop, Sony could, in a way, relaunch the phone – or at least bring focus to the device again as it continues to develop the Xperia Z4.

If rumors are to be believed, we’ll not only get no new device at MWC, but Sony will also not hold a press conference. Instead, Sony will opt to simply have a booth where their current fleet of products will be showcased. If true, this seems like a miscalculation from Sony; they could use any free publicity they can on their devices. While a press conference itself isn’t free, Sony could use the chance to tell reporters and bloggers (and in turn, us) why the Xperia Z3 and other devices like the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is worthy a worthy purchase. Unlike CES, where Sony has to talk about their entire product range, MWC gives them a unique chance to simply tell and sell the story of Sony Mobile and the Xperia lineup.

Discuss:

If Sony is indeed not showing any new products, do you think it makes sense for them to skip the press conference or is it a missed opportunity?
