Layoffs to Hit ‘DriveClub’ Developer Evolution Studios

After what can only be described as a botched launch despite a massive delay from its original launch date, DriveClub turned out to be one of the finest driving games yet. Beautiful visuals with robust gameplay that blends single player and multiplayer in a plethora of maps and events make DriveClub a game that shouldn’t be missed. However, seeing as it took an additional two months after launch in a very public manner for the game to be fixed, it suffered in sales as racing fans stayed away from the game. With poor sales tends to come layoffs and today, the studio is receiving such news.

Confirmed by Sony, Evolution Studios will be hit with layoffs though no studio closure is announced…yet? (hoping not!) According to Sony, the team will continue to work on the promised DriveClub PlayStation Plus Edition.

Evolution Studios will now focus on DriveClub as a service going forward, in particular, the important launch of the PS Plus Edition. We will be restructuring Evolution Studios to ensure that [Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios] and in particular, Evolution Studios are in the best position to achieve these goals.

Our first party development studios are key to our creative strategy and we are very excited about the future projects being worked on and the role Evolution Studios will play.

Here is hoping that in the long term, Evolution Studios will get another crack at the series and be able to develop DriveClub 2 because this is a game that fans should be playing and a title that deserves its own franchise, much like Gran Turismo. As always with such things, my thoughts are with the staff members who will have to look for work.

At this point, do you even care for DriveClub: PlayStation Plus Edition?
