Sony Confirms 4K HDR Support for X930C and X940C

Sony_XBR_75X940C_1_SlimRight after CES 2015, we’d reported on the inclusion of HDR in Sony’s 2015 fleet of XBR 4K televisions. While not every model would offer support for 4K HDR, we were told by fairly reliable sources that Sony’s flagship units would offer them. For those unfamiliar, HDR in a nutshell offers brighter whites and darker blacks at the same time. At the same time, HDR sets provide a wider range of light for the TV to display a picture.

Now, Sony has confirmed that HDR will be coming to their flagship series which means more colors with brighter whites and darker darks. More details after the jump.

In a press release, Sony confirmed 4K HDR support for the X930C and X940C which will arrive sometime next month. Once available, the 65-inch and 75-inch model won’t have HDR support out of the box. That will arrive sometime later this summer via a network update.

As it stands, Blu-ray movies, including 4K Blu-ray, won’t support HDR. That means you’ll have to rely on services like Netflix to get your 4K HDR fill with shows like House of Cards and Marco Polo.

The X930C and X940C series will also be compatible with High Dynamic Range (HDR) content via a network update this summer. HDR is an emerging video format that can display a wider range of brightness levels which will allow content creators, such as movie directors, to expand their range of creativity. HDR content will be available from major video service providers like Amazon and Netflix this year. With Sony’s unique technology, X-tended Dynamic Range™ PRO (75-inch model) and X-tended Dynamic Range (65-inch model), customers can enjoy a peak brightness of LED as well as deeper blacks, providing them with a superior viewing experience compared to that of normal HDR video sources as well as any other video source.
