When I first reported on this, I had it the back of my mind that maybe Sony is going towards some app centric experience. However after reading all the above facts, it seems like Sony is looking to close their entire online shopping presence. After all, if you’re going to debut a new shopping method, why do away with gift cards and and warranties? No matter how you spin this, it’s not a good sign for what’s happening at Sony. Then again, I have more Sony products in my house than the typical Sony employee and I’ve likely purchased a good 75% from Amazon. Could it be that Sony’s online portal is so scantly used that it doesn’t make any sense for them to maintain it?

After all, it’s not just the cost of maintaining the website but the infrastructure that goes along with it like inventory management and customer support. Now Sony can just sell directly to its partners like Amazon and Best Buy and let them deal with the retail aspect. I have a feeling some other big bomb shells are in store for us as the year goes on.
