Towards the rear end of July, Sony released PS4 firmware update 2.57 which brought with it some minor tweaks to your favorite console. As was noted then, the update brought with it

System software stability during use of some features has been improved.

Now the optional update is mandatory, meaning you’ll have to download and install it before you can run a Vault of Glass raid as you frantically prepare for Destiny: The Taken King. With the shift in requirement, Sony has also released a new Changelog for PS4 firmware update 2.57.

From Sony:

Change to the error message when attempting to download content without enough free space. The new message is – Cannot download.

To download the content, you must delete unnecessary content from system storage. You can do this by selecting [Settings] > [System Storage Management].

If you receive the above message delete game data to free up HDD space.

Coming in at 245MB, the update and installation process shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. Though it’s unclear why Sony has shifted from optional to mandatory for the update, it’s likely related to laying the groundwork for the upcoming PS4 firmware update 3.0 which is believed to bring some major features to the console and prepare for upcoming titles like Destiny: The Taken King and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.
