Sony to Use ‘4K X-Reality’ Display in Xperia Z5+?

In early August, some rumors suggested that Sony would be incorporating a 4K display in their upcoming flagship smartphone. Come September 2nd, Sony will take center stage at IFA 2015 where it’s all but confirmed that the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact will be announced. At the time, the news seemed sketchy as it made little sense for Sony to place such a high resolution screen in the two phones, especially the Xperia Z5 Compact which will have a smaller screen size.

However with the possibility of an Xperia Z5+ which could boast a 6-inch display and some new leaks, a 4K display may not be so preposterous. Those details after the jump.

Helping fuel the rumors that Sony could in fact use a 4K display are some new images from Sony marketing using “4K X-Reality which is familiar to the 4K X-Reality PRO tag that Sony uses for their 4K televisions. Though little to go by, it would make sense for Sony to not use the PRO tag line and reserve that for their much larger sets while still tapping into that 4K naming scheme across their line. Apple does this with their Retina displays which can now be found in their 5K iMac and other products like the iPad Air 2. While their mobile devices use the Retina tagline, Apple refers to their new iMac screen as Retina HD.

Much like previous rumors, the newest on the subject still points to the 4K display being exclusive to the Xperia Z5+, a likely 6-inch phone where the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact will instead offer a 1080p display. This certainly makes sense, seeing how a 4K display will surely be a battery drain and less useful on a smaller screen.

Offering a 4K display on the Xperia Z5+ not only sets it apart from other phablets, but allows Sony to use the devices size to its advantage of not simply offering a phone with a ludicrously long batter life time which though a plus, might not be as compelling or marketable as a phone with a 4K display. Don’ take this as me saying batter life isn’t important. However, seeing most devices last us throughout the day with no problem, especially larger phones which tend to offer a two day battery and our builtin habit of charging our devices over night, offering a third day of charge isn’t nearly as compelling or exciting as a 4K display.

Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to see if the rumors pan out though sources say that the Xperia Z5+ might not come out till later in the year. It’s unclear if that also means Sony won’t be announcing at IFA or if it will be revealed with just a later arrival date.

Does a 4K display make sense in a phablet like the Xperia Z5+ which will likely have a 6-inch display?
