Sony Pictures Announces Six (4K) UHD Blu-ray Titles With HDR

A few months back, Sony Pictures revealed a few titles that would be released in 4K HDR. Now we have our first official look at the retail packaging which sports the new UHD Blu-ray logo and color. Sharp-eyed readers will also notice the HDR tag at the bottom which will not be universal across all movies. Much like how all 3D Blu-ray titles also offer a 2D version, all UHD Blu-ray movies will also come with a 1080p disc as well for more flexibility. Sony Pictures hopes to bring their movies to market in early 2016 though it’s worth noting that Sony Electronics currently does not offer a 4K Blu-ray player. That will likely change in January when CES 2016 will be held.

More details, including title availability after the jump.

It’s frankly a shame that, unlike PS3 which gained a lot of media playback options over time such as 3D Blu-ray, PS4 will likely never be able to offer 4K Blu-ray playback, meaning that you’ll certainly need a separate UHD Blu-ray player. Once attained, Sony Pictures will offer you

  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Salt
  • Hancock
  • Chappie
  • Pineapple Express
  • The Smurfs 2

Along with the increased resolution, select titles will also offer Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio support though that’s also bleeding edge seeing how there barely exists any systems that support the audio format. Once again expect that to change in the next year or two. Though not limited to the titles below, Sony Pictures has already revealed a list of other 4K titles they have but don’t take that as a commitment of release in the near term. They include

  • Fury
  • Captain Phillips
  • Crouching Tiger
  • Hidden Dragon
  • Men In Black
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Fifth Element
  • Bad Boys
  • The Da Vinci Code
  • Bram Stoker’s Dracula
  • Leon: The Professional
  • Lawrence Of Arabia
  • The Bridge on the River Kwai
  • The Guns of Navarone
  • Taxi Driver
  • Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Sony Pictures has yet to offer a MSRP on their UHD Blu-ray titles. Besides Sony Pictures, Disney, Fox, and Warner Brothers have announced support for the 4K format.
