PS4 Passes 2 Million Units Sold in Japan

Official PS4_02

A long time ago, Japan was the bell weather indicator of a consoles and games success. In that time, the dominance of the once gaming Mecca has fallen with most AAA titles and console sales coming from the North America and Europe. Still, the country beyond a symbolic link plays a role in the success of a console and Japan has just pushes PS4 a bit more ahead.

The latest number now from Japan indicate that Sony has sold 2,005,949 (very exact, right?) PlayStation 4 consoles in Japan. A far cry from the over 15 million units sold in the US and a small fraction of the nearly 30 million units sold, it still marks another territory where Sony is dominating with PS4.

It’s unlikely that Xbox One has sold over 100k units in Japan. The last numbers to come out of Japan were in the week of June where Microsoft sold a total of 100 units in the entire country. That might mean that even my estimate of 100k units in Japan might be generous.

Ultimately the more success the PS4 enjoys in its home country, the more likely that game developers like Capcom, Square Enix, and Konami Koei will first look at PS4 when developing a new title. With PlayStation Experience just a few days away, it will be interesting to see if Sony has any big announcements for their leading console to further invigorate PS4 sales for the holiday season.
