For the Xperia Z5 series which includes the Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium, Sony is releasing a new camera app with a refreshed UI. The new Camera 2.0 update

brings a minimalist interface and new features designed to make capturing the best shots and accessing Xperia Camera apps even easier.

More after the jump, including what the new app does and the weird limitations of it.

According to Sony, you can now

swipe to switch between the main camera modes; Superior Auto, Manual, Video and Xperia Camera apps. Settings are also more accessible and customisable with simple swipes and touches, using on-screen sliders.

The camera is now likely the most used app on smartphones and one of the biggest reasons consumers upgrade from one device to another. A refreshed UI can go a long way towards unlocking powerful features that otherwise might be forgotten by users or too hard to utilize.

Now if Sony could improve their sensor algorithm, seeing how iPhone tends to take superior pictures with older sensors from Sony versus Xperia devices. The only bizarre thing here is that the update is limited to Sony’s latest devices and doesn’t extend to even the Xperia Z3+ which was released only 7 months ago. Here’s hoping that the update will be made available on more devices in the near future.
