Sony Xperia X Price Slashed After 10 Days In the US

Any Xperia fan will tell you that the writing has been on the wall for years and that the outlook of Sony Mobile in the US looks dismal. After all, just a few days ago, Sony during an investors day laid out the future of their mobile division and one key moving forward is to defocus on India, USA, China, and Brazil. The irony in all of this is that from the outside, it’s hard to tell how Sony ever did focus on these territories. Now to add further irony to all of this, Sony has opted to give the Xperia X a price drop in the US after just 10 days.

Those looking to purchase the Sony Xperia X can now look forward to its new $499.99 price point, a $50 drop. I’m not frankly sure if $50 was what made the phone previously too expensive or if Sony truly had to drop $100 to make the Xperia X more enticing – after all, one of the biggest sticking point for reviewers was the premium pricing of the Xperia X compared to what was given in return. In fact, it’s not that most reviewers didn’t like the phone but that for the price you were paying, other Android makers offered something better.

But at this point, the truth of the matter is that it’s simply too late. I’m not even referring to the policy shift from Sony Mobile which will see them ‘defocus’ on the US but the fact that the damage has already been done. By now, reviews for the Xperia X have been out for 2-3 weeks with all of them nearly echoing the same sentiment: the phone is simply too expensive.

Even if the price drop were $100 or $200 for that matter, the story for the Xperia X has been written; a decent phone that was too expensive; and for Sony, therein lies the problem. It’s not like they have any marketshare to speak of in the US or any marketing efforts which means their mobile division is purely reliant on its core fanbase and the tech community reviews.

They’ve not only already disappointing their fans by offering a device they believed was too expensive, but they’ve also lost out to the tech commentators and bloggers which have already shared their thoughts on the Xperia X and are moving onto the next thing.

For those interested, you can pick up the Xperia X at its reduced price at retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. There is always next year for Sony Mobile, right?
