Konami Announces Metal Gear Survive

Because you’ve all been clamoring for a new Metal Gear game, Konami, one of the most loved(?) game publishers of the past five years has decided to indulge you with a new entry in the series. Acting as official canon, Metal Gear Survive takes place directly after Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes (which you’ll soon see in the trailer) when soldiers from the mercenary corporation Militaires Sans Frontières, and I shit you not, are sucked through a wormhole into an alternate universe.

According to Konami:

Players find themselves on distorted desert landscapes full of massive half-formed structures, living biological threats, and the remains of a once strong military force now litter the landscape. Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multi-player experience.

Want to know how this game came to existence? Konami basically asked what’s popular these days and were told zombies and online co-op. They saw that they still had a fully functional game engine (FOX) and an IP with a loyal following that likely was never going to meet its full potential, seeing how they burned every bridge possible with its creator, Hideo Kojima.

Mash all that together and you get yourself Metal Gear Survive. Now for all I know, the game itself could be fine, and we really won’t know till 2017 when it launches, but this is basically what happens when you want to milk something to its last breath. It’s as if Paramount wanted to make a medieval movie but knew the Star Trek name was still strong and so they plotted a side event that happens after the Enterprise leaves Earth where a temporal wormhole sucks in characters you’ve never heard or cared about back to the year 550 and called it Star Trek Knights. In reality, Paramount wanted to make a movie called King Arthur’s Knights.
