PlayStation Vue Gains HBO and Cinemax

PlayStation Vue, the a la carte TV service from Sony, has just crossed another major milestone by brining onboard HBO and Cinemax to its list of offered channels. Dwayne Benefield, Vice President, head of PlayStation Vue:

HBO and Cinemax on PlayStation Vue, and the HBO Now app on PS4 and PS3 will launch ahead of the October 2 premiere of the highly anticipated new drama, Westworld, created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

Benefield continues:

The launch of HBO and Cinemax on PlayStation Vue will mark the first time HBO’s live programming and Cinemax’s channel will be available directly to you as standalone channel offerings, without the need for a bundle subscription. That means through PlayStation Vue, you’ll have the option to subscribe to HBO and Cinemax as standalone channels or add them to your existing PlayStation Vue plan.

For those who already have a standalone subscription for HBO, they’ll be able to download the HBO Go app and consume away. But for those without a cable subscription, both HBO and Cinemax will be priced at $15 each and can be enjoyed as an added channel on top of one of the PlayStation Vue bundles or as a standalone channel. This is a fairly big deal for Sony as Sling, their closest rival, also allows you to watch HBO but it must be purchased on top of a bundle and is not offered as a standalone channel.

Unless I’m forgetting something, this now makes PS Vue a complete service with access to all your typical network channels and options to add premium channels like HBO and Cinemax alongside Showtime, Epix, Fox Soccer Plus, and NFL Network. Sony isn’t 100% clear on when the two premium channels will launch except that it will be available in time for Westworld which arrives on October 2nd on HBO. For those unfamiliar with the new show, be excited.
