Sony SmartWatch 3 Update (M1D63X) Now Available

To those of you with a Sony SmartWatch 3, it’s time to fire up the good-ol software update and bring your device up to build number M1D63X and Android Wear version 1.5.0.3269884. According to Xperia Blog, they haven’t

noticed any big changes in this Android 6.0.1 update, but it does include the latest 5 September 2016 Android security patches.

Many were hoping that Sony would release SmartWatch 4 at IFA in early September but with the event well behind us, it’s unlikely that there will be any surprise product announcements coming from Sony in 2016. From sources that I’ve talked to, it’s looking like Sony’s SmartWatch series might be coming to an end. As Dan Seifert from The Verge notes:

major Android Wear partners such as Motorola, Huawei, and LG have said they won’t be launching any more Wear smartwatches this year

This is likely due to the fact that none have yet to gain any meaningful attraction. At this point, the future of the entire platform is a bit in flux but don’t be surprised to see new devices in 2017 – it just won’t be as many as we’d seen pushed out in 2015 when the platform launched.

It’s worth noting that Sony did launch a new watch in late August, the FES Watch U, which is more of a hybrid watch that runs on Sony’s own software than on Android Wear.

Do you have an Android Wear watch? If so, what model?
