CBS All Access Coming to PS4 – A.K.A. You Can Watch Star Trek: Discovery

When PS4 released, it had one clear goal in mind – to be the ultimate gaming machine, and that was quite apparent long before the console ever launched with every exec talking about one thing: games. This was quite the different tone from its predecessor, the PS3, a console that was all about the ultimate everything machine. From games, to 3D movies, Blu-ray, streaming, and anything else you can think of. But as you and I know, there is a lot more we use our consoles for than just games, namely streaming content and to that end, Sony has been steadily bolstering what PS4 can do. A big part of that has been ramping up their own streaming service, PS Vue, but another part of that strategy has been to bring as many media apps as possible.

Jon Fingas writes for Engadget:

Relax, American PlayStation fans, you don’t have to worry about missing out on Star Trek: Discovery when your Xbox One-toting friends start watching. CBS has rolled out All Access on the PS4

As for the cost of the service:

Spend $6 per month and you’ll get “reduced” commercials, while $10 per month lets you watch in uninterrupted bliss.

Considering you can get Netflix for $9 or $12 if you want 4K content, this deal comes off as thievery because it’s not like it unlocks other CBS-owned studio channels or content. I’ve already hedged my bet that Star Trek: Discovery is going to be a massive failure because the only people willing to bulk up that much money just to watch one show are hardcore Trekkies and I’m not sure enough of them exist out there to float the show/channel. As a long time Trekkie, I hope I’m wrong and even if I am, I’ll wait for the show to come out on Blu-ray and watch it that way.

The app can now be downloaded for free via the PlayStation Store.
