Fox Sports to air UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus in VR

There is a famous movie line out there that goes a little something like this.

This is blasphemy! This is madness!

David Lump from Engadget:

Samsung just announced that it’s adding UFC fights and other events to its new immersive programming lineup. It’s the latest company to start broadcasting sports events in VR, but it’s far from the first. Fox Sports has been uploading virtual reality coverage of big-name events for years, most recently livestreaming this year’s Super Bowl. But the network is airing in VR a match that folks outside the US might consider just as massive: This Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventas.

The network is pairing with its usual partner LiveLike to livestream the match through the free Fox Sports VR app. Fans who download it and sign in with their TV subscription credentials can tune in before the game starts at 2PM ET this Saturday, June 3rd for pre-match material. The app doesn’t require any fancy equipment — just your smartphone, though it’ll be easier to watch with a simple headset like Samsung’s Gear VR or Google Cardboard.

I’m sure by now you’ve guessed which movie the beginning quote belongs to and might be wondering what that has to do with anything. If instead, we change the above line to

 THIS IS SONY

it all will make a bit more sense because this is indeed madness. Let’s just go down the list of things that might make Sony the perfect company to provide this:

  • Controls a TV and movie studio
  • Sells professional camera to broadcasters
  • PlayStation Vue, a streaming TV service that’s available on PS4
  • PlayStation VR, the leading VR headset is on PS4
  • PlayStation is widely popular in Europe and with sports enthusiasts

So how is it again that Sony is not the one creating VR content like the UEFA Champions League? And if not helping create it, how are they not part of this deal to make sure PSVR users are included in this? Make no mistake, PlayStation is where it’s at when it comes to gaming in VR and I’m sure we’ll see plenty of new titles unveiled at E3. But with such a dominant platform in their arsenal, Sony needs to do a much better job at catering to a bigger demographic. This includes attracting developers outside of the gaming arena and inviting users who aren’t just gamers.

PlayStation 4 with PlayStation VR is the easiest and cheapest way to experience VR. It’s as simple as that, so why is it not where vast amounts of unique content are?

The fact that Sony is the most equipped amongst all of its competitors to provide the final between Real Madrid and Juventus in VR (and has the demographic that would most likely want to tune into it) and is somehow not in on this deal and that it’s instead Gear VR and Google Cardboard users who are getting this is madness. But then again, maybe this is Sony?
