Sony Offering 3 Free Months With PlayStation Plus Subscriptions

playstation-plus-three-months

Sony recently announced that they will be offering three free months with every one-year PS Plus subscriptions until early March this year. PlayStation Plus is perhaps the best deal available in gaming right now; not only do you get a smattering of free full games for your PS3 and PS Vita, you also get discounts of up to 75% on games, DLC, themes, and avatars.

Sony has said that PlayStation Plus subscribers save up to $2,472 because of the amount of free stuff and discounts they get. And since most PS3’s available have sufficient hard drive space for downloadable games, it makes sense to a paying member. Oh and if you’re already a PS Plus subscriber, fear not as you can stack your subscriptions; paying for another year will add to your current standing in addition to the three free months you’ll receive for free.

PS2 Classic SIREN Coming to PSN This Tuesday

siren-shibito

One of the most memorable – and scariest – moments from SIREN.

Sony announced earlier this week that the PS2 classic SIREN is coming to PSN this Tuesday. For those of you who haven’t heard of SIREN, it’s a Japanese survival horror game for the PS2 that became well known for its unique facial animation technology, multi-character story-line, and sight-jacking game mechanic.

If the name sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because you’ve seen or played SIREN: Blood Curse on the PSN. SIREN: Blood Curse was a re-imagining of the original game with characters and story that catered towards a North American audience. It’s a great game for what it was aiming to achieve, however, for the authentic Japanese characters, scares, and scenarios, you’ll have to play the original coming soon as a PS2 Classic on PSN.

Sony Sells 525,000 PS3’s on Black Friday, PS+ Sales Up 259%

Sony 2012 Black Friday PlayStation Sales Report

By now, most of the big Black Friday numbers have been released. This includes sales of the new Nintendo Wii U and the Xbox 360 which beat it out. Appropriately so, all eyes have been on Sony to release their numbers and with no news, many began to worry. Luckily, those worries were for not as Sony has finally released their Black Friday sales figures for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Plus membership with some encouraging numbers. In the United States between November 18th and November 24th, Sony sold 525,000 PlayStation 3 units. This is an increase of 15% for the PS3 compared to last year’s Black Friday bundles while software and peripherals grew 9% over the same period last year. If you think that’s impressive, Sony has reported that PS3 sales for Latin America were up 200% when compared to last year, though no specifc numbers were included. Even the PlayStation Vita enjoyed robust sales though not quite as gangbuster as PlayStation Plus.

Here We Go: PSN Hacked Again? (updated)

Here we go again folks. A recent tweet (seen below) from super fantastical hacker group Anonymous has the internet and gamers in uproar again, by claiming to have hacked the PlayStation Network (PSN) again. Those who are familiar with the matter will note that the group nearly 16 months ago hacked Sony which resulted in the company shutting down PSN for over a month and killing off the Qriocity brand.

Anonymous claims to have  50 gigabyte database of email accounts and passwords though this time around, all of that data appears to be encrypted. Sony has yet to confirm or deny the attack. Wether the attack is true or not, I highly recommend signing into your PSN account from a computer and changing your password, just to be on the safe side of things. We’ll have more on this as it develops. After the jump, a direct link to change your account.

Update:

Good news as the entire thing appears to be fake (thank god). Seems like the group was trying to get some attention while scaring off gamers. Still, its a good time to look at your account and make sure that your password is solid.

PlayStation Store Shut Down in South Korea

If you’re a PlayStation 3 owner in South Korea, we have some bad news for you. Thanks to a new law passed by the government there which “prevents under-18s from being asked for their names or ages for the purpose of account authentication,” Sony has been forced to close down access to the PlayStation Store from the PS3.  The new  “Game Industry Promotion Act” is set to go into affect on July 1st.

On the bright side, despite Sony taking the store down proactively, access to PSN like multiplayer gaming and chatting will continue to function until the PlayStation Store returns “sometime this year.” Interestingly, South Koreans can still access the store via the PSP or PS Vita. It remains to be seen if there is some loophole or exceptions that exist or Sony simply hasn’t gotten around to shutting them down yet.

Playstation Store Update: (06-19-2012)

And if you’re a fan of PS one classics, be sure to check out Tomba, the pink haired caveman hero. One of the most popular games from the early days of the PS one, Tomba has just the right mix of nostalgia and gameplay to make the game worth a look all these years later.
