Sony Patents SmartWig

Sony_SmartWigAs the title suggests, Sony has created a patent for a device they call the SmartWig. As the name suggest, the SmartWig follows the tradition of other wearable devices like smart glasses by incorporating tech in a wearable fashion. According to the patent, the SmartWig could be made from

horse hair, human hair, wool, feathers, yak hair or any kind of synthetic material

The wig then incorporates a hidden circuit board and microprocessor that can talk to a “second computing device” wirelessly like your smartphone. Once a connection is place, the SmartWig could then “provide tactile feedback to the user.”

According to Sony, the SmartWig will then be able to vibrate when you receive an email or a text message. Other capabilities from the wig could include GPS with different regions vibrating you towards the right direction. Sony is even thinking of ways of incorporating a camera and laser pointers though its not clear how either could be utilized. Sony believes that a wig is the perfect place to hide delicate electronics as humans tend to “instinctively protect their heads more than other body parts.” As with all patents, don’t look for an exact device to hit the market if ever. Sony of course is no stranger to wearable tech, having just recently released the SmartWatch 2.

Discuss:

Can you see a use for the SmartWig or is it just wishful sci-fi thinking?
