Sony Delays HDD Recording on 2015 Android TVs

Sony_4K_TV_Official

One of the features that will eventually make its way to Sony’s 2015 HD and 4K Android TVs will be the ability to record video. Specially, via a software update, Sony was going to enable USB HDD recording and PIP/PAP. Though destined for Europe only, the feature has once again been delayed. That’s because Sony had originally promised the additional functionality by Fall and will now instead deliver it sometime in 2016.

The Xperia M update (Dual version too) that we seen coming also known as “feature release 2” is now rolling out. The C1904 (Canada, US, India, parts of Australia and more) is already offering the update while the global C1905 version shows that various European and Asian countries are the first to get it including Poland, Italy, Malaysia and Indonesia.

This update has been long anticipated, given that the 4.3 uplift brought a very elegant interface along the lines of the 2014 Xperias but a few bugs too.

Themes are working! We’ve tested a variety of themes including the FIFA 2014 and Spiderman 2 themes, check out the gallery and download them with direct links from Google Play.

More Hints of Minor 4.3 Update for Xperia M (Updated)

Screenshot_2014-04-10-22-48-25

Recently we found what appeared to be new firmware coming for the Xperia M via a major global network, a minor bug-fixing update that many users have been asking for. It’s not unusual for such an update to follow a major uplift.

This would be a timely update as the latest Jellybean version that was released brought elegance and a few bugs for users ranging from uninstallable Xperia themes to bluetooth turning itself off.

What’s appearing looks like fairly early testing so nothing is coming tomorrow. This reveal comes 10 weeks since 4.3 was originally tested, so things are looking good for some fixes. This fresh hint appeared just a few hours ago…

New Xperia M Update Coming to Fix 4.3 Bugs? (Updated)

Xperia M C1905 Cropped

Recently Sony treated Xperia M users (and now Dual too) to 4.3 Jellybean. It brought cool new camera features, a slick, white UI and updated media apps. But some users have not had a good experience with the update. The stunning Xperia Themes which were shown off beforehand appear to be broken as no one can download them, the much-loved T9 keyboard is gone from the English keyboard settings and some users report frequent freezing or a sluggish UI in general.

A major global network has posted details of an update to the Xperia M mentioning “feature release 2”. Is a new update coming?

Xperia L 4.2 Jellybean Update Certified – 15.3.A.1.17 (Updated)

Xperia L Black Vertical Cropped

Sony is continuing it’s Jellybean rollout for Xperia owners, this time it’s the L.

The 4.3″ mid-range device that was released in May last year hasn’t enjoyed may updates yet, and is surely overdue a 4.3/4.4 upgrade that is worthy of it’s reasonable specs.

An update should be coming soon, as a new software version has been certified. It looks to be another 4.2 update, likely bringing bug fixes and a smoother UI.

Sony to End Software Support on 12 Android Phones, Including Xperia S, and Xperia ion

Sony_Mobile_Xperia_ion_Update_Path

Sony believes that the typical lifespan of a smartphone is between 18 months and two years eld. To that end, the Japanese giant is discounting software support on 12 Android smartphones which the company lists as EoL (End of Life). This means that the latest firmware update that Sony has released will be the final set of new features and/or bug fixes that the handset will receive. To be clear, this doesn’t mean that Sony is pulling down any of the software, meaning that if you’re running on Android 4.0 and Sony has released Android 4.1 for your device, you can still at anytime update your phone to the latest software Sony had to offer. So what phones are getting the cut?

Sony Xperia M Update September Version 15.1.C.1.17 (Updated)

YellowThe Sony Xperia M (C1904/C1905) has been updated from its initial launch firmware of 15.1.A.1.9 to 15.1.C.1.17. It remains on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean but should offer improvements in a number of areas.

The details of the code suggest that this is a relatively minor update though the first few updates after launch tend to sort out any major annoyances that users may have. The change in digits from 1.9 to 1.17 suggests relatively minor bug fixes or improvements.

Sony Releases New Xperia PLAY Firmware for Verizon

Seemingly out of the blue, Sony has released a new Xperia PLAY firmware, previously thought as the PlayStation Phone. The new firmware which build on the current Android 2.3 Gingerbread build takes the phone to Android 2.3.4 by giving it continuous autofocus while recording in 720p. To make the act of taking photos even easier, Sony has now assigned the right trigger button as the camera shutter key. Curiously, this Xperia PLAY firmware is only for Verizon owners despite the phone being available on AT&T as well. Other things to look forward to are new Verizon apps like VZ Navigator and Verizon Video-on-Demand (yay?). This update is now available and can be downloaded over the air. More, after the jump.

PlayStation Vita Plagued With Bugs, Sony Issues Apology and Software Update

To say there’s a lot riding on the PlayStation Vita for Sony is an understatement. The company whose been lacking a hit products for many years now as it continues falling behind to rivals like Apple and Samsung has just launched their latest portable handheld gaming console in Japan to long, sold out lines which is a good indicator. That is, till many users starting arriving home with their Vita units, only to find the system unresponsive and plagued with many bugs.

It should be noted that many high profile devices, especially those with multiple functionalities tend to have bugs during launch and this seems no different. The only concern is in the number of users who seem to be experiencing these bugs which is never a good thing, if for purely PR reasons. It does seem though that Sony was/is aware of such bugs as the company has already issued a public apology and released a new system update, designed to address bugs like unresponsive touch screens, complete system freezes, and poor performance.

We cannot currently confirm if the new system update has addressed all the mentioned issues but will be following the story closely. Sony will be launching the PS Vita on February 22nd for US gamers. After the jump, your chance to comment and Sony’s public apology.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Gingerbread (2.3) Rollout Finally Begins

The once-prematurely-announced Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Gingerbread (2.3) has taken a cue from the Autobots and begun its rollout. The new software update, which is slowly expanding from country to country, “will update your X10 to Android 2.3.3 (firmware 3.0.1.G.0.75) on Baseband 2.1.71 and Kernel 2.6.29-00054-g5f01537.”  The software update, which can only be installed from your PC (again, sorry Mac users) via the PC Companion software, is currently issued to only 10% of the Xperia X10 phones. If you’ve checked via the PC Companion software and have yet to receive the new update, the best you can do is to hang tight and wait during the next week as the update expands to your territory.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread Coming Soon to Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

In 2010, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 was the flagship smartphone from Sony Ericsson. Upon its release to the wild, the device that was designed to lead the then ailing company from the “dumbphone” to the smartphone revolution was already out of date, running Android 1.6 while many competitors were already running newer builds. Throughout the coming months, Sony Ericsson would continue an internal transition to the new business model and phone offerings and at time give hopes to X10 owners with small updates. Eventually, Sony would announce that the Xperia X10 would never see the light beyond Android 2.1 which would be release in late December of 2010. Then, something happened internally at Sony and they began to announce new and exciting models with the latest Android OS already on them. As the company escelated their support for Android, they did so while keeping owners of previous models like the X10 in mind. Sony would soon announce that Android 2.3 Gingerbread would be coming to the Xperia X10 in August of 2011.

Now, Sony Ericsson has announced reconfirmed that. Though some sites have been reporting that Android 2.3 is now out for the Xperia X10, it’s actually not quite true yet, but the update is right around the corner. Mattias Holm, who is the head of product PR from SE went to say:

The launch is imminent and timing according to plan but we just need some more days before we can push the button.

So although it might be a tad disappointing to find out that the update is not coming out today, we do have to keep in mind that Sony’s original target date was sometime in August and we are still a few days away from that. Once the update is live, users need to simply need to plug your Xperia X10 to your PC (not Mac) via a USB cable and download Sony’s PC software management which will then help you with the rest of the process. Sony Ericsson is also working on a OTA (over the air) update though no timetable has been given to that. Once Android 2.3 Gingerbread is released for Xperia X10 owners, you can expect to find the following updates:

  • Facebook inside Xperia – a series of unique integrations of Facebook into your multimedia apps, phonebook and calendar
  • The possibility of using your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot (carrier specific)
  • Music player with equalizer
  • USB tethering – Share your 3G data connection via USB connector
  • Photo widget – one click access to your photo gallery app
  • App tray sorting – arrange your apps in the order you want them
Once the Android 2.3 update is late, you can be sure that we will be reporting it for you.

Sony Bloggie Software Update 1.3 Available for Mac OS X

Though the Mac is able to virtually play nice with any camera and camcorder, simply by plugging it in, it didn’t stop Sony from releasing a software especially designed for Mac users. The software, which allows users to plug in their Bloggie, import photos and videos to Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube to name a few, is now getting some more attention from Sony with a new update. The Sony Bloggie Software Update 1.3 brings the following changes for Mac OS X users:

  • Full keyboard controls
  • Multiple select with mouse dragging
  • Improved sharing queue pages
  • Guided tour overview
  • Bug fixes
If you already own the free software, simply fire it up and you will be prompted for an automatic download. If you don’t, you can go ahead and visit Sony’s support website which still indicates the availability of version 1.2. After you’ve downloaded that, you will be notified of the new update. For those looking for some more information, we’d previously put together a video review of the Sony Bloggie Software for Mac OS X.
