List of Sony 4K HDR TVs Compatible With Netflix HDR App Revealed

As we continue towards the transition of all 4K content, it’s becoming clear that where the format truly shines is with 4K HDR. While 4K itself certainly looks grand, it’s not something that can’t be achieved with even upscaled 1080p content. However, 4K HDR is one that cannot be mimicked. Not only do you first need to have an HDR compatible TV, but the content itself also needs to natively contain the brighter highlights and more vivid colors. All this translates to a more realistic image with more depth and pop.

One of the biggest proponents of 4K HDR has been Netflix. The streaming service already has a few shows on deck like Marco Polo, and eventually Daredevil that will be made available in HDR – and this list will likely continue to increase as new shows are filmed. But a 4K HDR set isn’t the only thing required to make the magic happen. Your TV will also need the updated Netflix app which supports it and not everybody is going to get that, again depending on the components inside your TV and the requirements from Netflix.

Aren’t you glad you haven’t bought a 4K TV yet? After the jump, the list of Sony 4K HDR TVs compatible with Netflix HDR.

Sony Once Again Talks HDR for Its 4K TVs (X930C and X940C)

Many had been skeptical of Sony’s HDR ambitions for their 2015 lineup of 4K TVs coming out of CES. This was in part due to a lack of information flow from Sony but since that time, more news has trickled out of the company. In short, HDR support is coming to the X930C and X940C. While the series will launch late next month, HDR support itself will come via a software update later in the summer. Neil King, Head of Home Entertainment, Sony UK and Ireland:

Sony has always been the leader in 4K and our exclusive Sony technologies have been at the core of providing TV lovers with the best picture quality, no matter what content they are watching. Our decades of experience allow us to introduce emerging industry standard HDR to our 4K Ultra HD TV series and to reinforce contrast thanks to Sony’s unique technology X-tended Dynamic Range PRO. And now, by pairing our unrivalled picture quality with Android TV, we are setting out to provide our customers with the best user experience possible.

Along side revealing HDR support for the X930C and X940C, Sony has also announced that the majority of their 2015 4K televisions will arrive in May. Starting today, the X930C, X850C, and X930C/X940C 4K televisions are available for pre-sale (whatever that means) and will be on-sale for the masses in May with an arrival time sometime later that month.

Sony Confirms 4K HDR Support for X930C and X940C

Sony_XBR_75X940C_1_SlimRight after CES 2015, we’d reported on the inclusion of HDR in Sony’s 2015 fleet of XBR 4K televisions. While not every model would offer support for 4K HDR, we were told by fairly reliable sources that Sony’s flagship units would offer them. For those unfamiliar, HDR in a nutshell offers brighter whites and darker blacks at the same time. At the same time, HDR sets provide a wider range of light for the TV to display a picture.

Now, Sony has confirmed that HDR will be coming to their flagship series which means more colors with brighter whites and darker darks. More details after the jump.

2015 Sony 4K TVs Shrink Slightly In Screen Size (X940C)

CES_2015_XBR_75X940C

One of the big surprises from Sony at CES 2015 was the X900C and X910C 4K televisions, which offer an exceptionally thin profile. In fact, the TVs, which come in a 55-, 65-, and 75-inch sizes, are just .2-inches thick. You can check out our short video from the CES show floor showing just how incredibly thin they are. While it was all but certain that Sony would bring new 4K televisions to market, we hadn’t considered that the company could shrink down their design by as much as they did. One expectation that we did have for CES 2015 was larger televisions from Sony.

Good thing we’re not betters over here as Sony interestingly enough has gone in the other direction for their 2015 fleet of 4K TVs. While their televisions are thinner than ever, screen size seems to have taken a hit as well. Details after the jump.

Comparing the 75-inch Sony 4K X910C and X940C

In 2015, the Sony 4K X900C series will launch and usher in a era of extremely slim televisions. Measuring at .2-inches, the Sony X900C (55- and 65-inch), X910C (75-inch) are one of the worlds slimmest televisions and 4K none the less.  While thicker and featuring the wedge design, the Sony X930C (65-inch) and X940C (75-inch) offer the extremely impressive Magnetic Fluid Speakers and give those who aren’t looking for a surround sound option an all-in-one television.

In the video above, we compare the two different models from the CES 2015 show floor.
