PlayStation Vita February Announcement – Live Coverage

lbp vita

February is shaping up to be an exciting time to be a gamer, especially if you’re a PlayStation fan. On February 20th, Sony is expected to reveal the PlayStation 4, often times referred to as Orbis. While many thought the announcement would also cover the PlayStation Vita which is in need of some desperate love (and for those who haven’t, read our Editorial: How Sony Can Save the PlayStation Vita, Part 1) it seems that Sony has reserved February 18th for the console. In just a few minutes, Sony will begin what’s expected as an all out blitz for their nearly one year old console. What can we expect? A host of new games is certain but will there also be a hardware refresh? We’ll find out shortly. After the break, the headlines as they happen.

Editorial: How Sony Can Save the PlayStation Vita, Part 1

PlayStation Vita

It should come as no shock that the PlayStation Vita, which is nearing its first full year of release is struggling. While there was great hype leading up to the powerful handheld’s release from an excited consumer and lots of developer support, things quickly became derailed. It’s true that the PS Vita launched at a lower price than many had anticipated but the price still remains an obstacle for a device that caters only to the hard core, due to its form factor that makes it a conscious decision to carry around, versus say your smartphone that easily slips into your pocket.
Mix that with the fact that, soon after the PS Vita’s release, Nintendo slashed the price of the 3DS by nearly half where before, it loomed much closer to the PS Vita’s price point. With Nintendo’s rich history in handhelds and now a much lower price point for the 3DS, those itching for a new portable gaming system gravitated towards the 3DS while the average consumer was satisfied with playing mobile games on their iPhone which continues to get more and more powerful with each release.

And so, the great Catch 22 had begun for Sony. While publishers were quite enthusiastic about the PS Vita which boasted a powerful processor and GPU and consumers were quite satisfied with its new UI, as sales fell, so did publisher support. Publishers of course have little reason to support a device that garners a small market share while consumers have little reason to buy a gaming console that offers only a small library of support. So nearly a year later, how can Sony break the cycle and get consumers and publishers on board again?

Simple: by offering a price cut. Now I’m not the first to suggest this and nor is this idea original. However, what many tend to miss is that prices are created based on manufacturing costs and its not as if Sony is making a $250 profit on each unit sold. In fact, for the first four to five years of its life, Sony lost a big chunk of money on each PlayStation 3 unit sold. So what has changed in the last year that would allow Sony to drop the price of the Vita?

Layoffs Explained, SuperBot Parts Ways with Sony

Superbot

Just last week, we reported on how SuperBot Entertainment, the developers behind the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita exclusive title, PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, were laying off 20 employees. At the time, it wasn’t clear if the developers were downsizing after the ramp up for PS All-Stars (which is typical as companies tend to hire additional staffing near the product’s release time to meet the game’s deadline), or if the layoff was due to the game not meeting sales expectations which would result in the company needing to cut costs. After today’s announcement that Sony and SuperBot are going their separate ways, it’s become quite clear as to why the layoffs took place.

Killzone: Mercenary Box Art Revealed, New Trailer

Killzone: Mercenary

While things have been quite on the PlayStation Vita front for some time, Sony looks to be shifting gears slowly as they continue to announce new games for the powerful handheld. Scheduled for a September 17th release date, Killzone: Mercenary continues to the FPS tradition of ISA vs. Helghans. Offering a true FPS experience, Killzone: Mercenary also continues on another tradition from developers Guerrilla; providing ground breaking visuals. Like Killzone on the PS2 and Killzone 2 & 3 on the PS3 which many thought could never match its initial CG trailer, Killzone: Mercenary taps into what the PlayStation Vita truly has to offer.

PS4

Not a lot of details yet but via their official Twitter channel, PlayStation is teasing February 20th as the day to ‘see the future.’ The press event, set to take place in New York City, looks to be centered around a big PlayStation announcement though no specifics are given. Is the PlayStation Vita getting a price drop? Is the PlayStation 4, codenamed Orbis, getting officially announced? All we have so far is the teaser video from Sony which can be viewed after the jump. This post will be updated as we learn more.

Superbot Lays Off 20 Employees After PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale

Superbot

Lay off stories are always the worst articles to write as they have a deep impact on things that matter, family and lively hood. While the internet is an easy place to hide and lay out criticism towards community members and developers like the huge backlash against Ninja Theory for their take on Devil May Cry, we have to remember that they are like you and I. Not to say that this was the case for Superbot, the developers behind the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita exclusive PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale. Instead, I want to draw focus that with every job less, be it a massive layoff or a small one, there is a real damage that comes to be it from it as those people no longer have a source of income to pay for their bills and rent.

Corpse Party Book of Shadows Preview

Corpse Party Book of Shadows Preview

Next week sees the release of XSeed Games’  highly anticipated sequel/prequel to PSP’s Corpse Party. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows tells multiple stories set during, before, and after the events of the original game.

Last year, I gushed about how much I loved the original Corpse Party for the PSP. Corpse Party was an old-school survival-horror adventure that combined Asian supernatural and North American gore-horror elements, and a 16-bit retro look to portray an interactive amalgamation of modern and classic horror. Now that the sequel is almost upon us, I think it’s high time to take a look at why you should pick up Corpse Party: Book of Shadows for your Vita.

Poll: Do You Prefer a PS3 or PS Vita for Christmas?

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

With Christmas less than two weeks away, many parents have started their Santa has started his hunt for Christmas presents. Be it the elusive iPad mini, a copy of The Amazing Spider-Man on Blu-ray, or a new gaming console, he wants to get you the thing you want most, as long as you’ve landed on the nice list. Those on the naughty list only qualify for a Nintendo Wii mini. So if you could choose what you’ll find under the Christmas tree, would you ask for the brand new PlayStation 3 or a PlayStation Vita?

Sony Sells 525,000 PS3’s on Black Friday, PS+ Sales Up 259%

Sony 2012 Black Friday PlayStation Sales Report

By now, most of the big Black Friday numbers have been released. This includes sales of the new Nintendo Wii U and the Xbox 360 which beat it out. Appropriately so, all eyes have been on Sony to release their numbers and with no news, many began to worry. Luckily, those worries were for not as Sony has finally released their Black Friday sales figures for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Plus membership with some encouraging numbers. In the United States between November 18th and November 24th, Sony sold 525,000 PlayStation 3 units. This is an increase of 15% for the PS3 compared to last year’s Black Friday bundles while software and peripherals grew 9% over the same period last year. If you think that’s impressive, Sony has reported that PS3 sales for Latin America were up 200% when compared to last year, though no specifc numbers were included. Even the PlayStation Vita enjoyed robust sales though not quite as gangbuster as PlayStation Plus.

PlayStation All-Stars Gets Rated by the ESRB

PlayStation All-Stars

Have you seen the series ‘Elders React’ on YouTube where current trends like PSY’s Gangnam Style are shown to the older generation and their reactions are captured? Or better yet, have you heard politicians try to explain the internet as a series of tubes? If so, you know the hilarity that can follow and, a note to my future self: don’t be like that. Now, the ESRB is joining the list of “out of touch” with their rating on PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, the beat-em-up/fighter for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Some gems include:

 Players use swords, energy blasters, fireballs, bazookas, and melee attacks to deplete opponents’ health in dynamically shifting environments’

And

 During one still-frame cutscene, a woman’s posterior is partially exposed.

Hilarious Robot Chicken PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale Video

Robot Chicken PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale

Those who tuned into Robot Chicken last night were presented with a hilarious and game-appropriate portrayal of PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale. Available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, the new beat-em-up/brawler from Sony houses many of the iconic characters from PlayStation’s past and current games. While many rightfully tend to point a finger at Sony’s lack of quality advertising, this 60 second spot should go a long way to prove that, at  the hands of the right person, Sony’s deep history of quality content can lend itself to some fantastic advertisement. After the jump, we have the hilarious video for your viewing pleasure which takes a look at what your favorite game characters do between matches.

Editorial: Why $50 Games Are Hurting the PS Vita

Call of Duty: Declassified

Just an hour ago, a conversation took place on Twitter in regards to the quality of Call of Duty: Declassified for the PlayStation Vita. So far, reviews and user experience has been less than stellar with reports of lag, glitches, and control issues. Many had seen CoD on the PS Vita as a knight in shining armor for the struggling console and it’s no surprise. CoD games sell and sell by the droves. A proper CoD game could really capture the market Sony is going for: those who wish to play console quality games on the go.

I’ve personally yet to play CoD: Declassified on the Vita so it’s hard for me to comment on the game. However, this led to another conversation on Twitter: the $50 price tag for CoD. Some have expressed their distaste that Activision would charge so much for a broken game. But even if it were a completely acceptable game, can publishers charge so much for PS Vita titles? After the jump, I explain why I believe these high prices are hurting the PS Vita.
