The PS Vita Box Art And Launch Apps

Sony Europe recently released the final box art design for the PlayStation Vita when it releases next year. The overall design and color for the PS Vita Box Art looks very pleasing to the eyes, and Sony’s definitely putting the light and dark blue colors associated to the Vita to good use.

According to the company, both the 3G and the Wi-fi SKU’s will use the same box design.

PS Vita Can Connect With PSP Via Ad-hoc Mode

Sony has recently revealed that the Playstation Vita and its cousin, the PSP, can communicate together and play games via the ad-hoc mode, which is a feature that’s available for most all multiplayer PSP games.

When playing PSP games on the Vita, most players can still play with their friends who still use PSP’s using ad-hoc. This means most people who still play Monster Hunter on the PSP (like myself) can still play with other people when upgrading to the Vita.

While it is a bit hard to find other people to play with using the regular ad-hoc mode, since not everyone has a PSP, Sony has been generous enough to release its Ad-hoc Party software for the PS3. This program allows anyone with a PSP to play with other people (on games like Monster Hunter) online as if they were playing it on infrastructure mode.

There has been no word from Sony regarding PS Vita Ad-hoc Party support. Stay tuned for more news on this.

Street Fighter X Tekken Will Have Cross-Platform DLC

A few weeks ago, Capcom announced that their highly-aniticipated crossover fighter Street Fighter X Tekken (pronounced Street Figthter Cross Tekken) would be coming to both the PS3 and the PlayStation Vita. The company also said that both versions will be pretty much identical graphically and gameplay-wise.

I was quite skeptical after hearing that the PS3 version would be the same as the Vita until I learned that they both platforms will recieve cross-platform DLC.

TGS 2011 – Final Fantasy X HD Coming to PlayStation Vita and PS3

At Sony’s TGS press conference, Square-Enix announced that they will be releasing the PS2 classic RPG Final Fantasy X HD for the PlayStation 3 and for PlayStation Vita.

According to Square Enix, the remastered FFX is a special 10th anniversary production. Made in 2001, Final Fantasy X was (at that time) Squaresoft’s landmark title that truly showed the power of the PS2. 10 years later, the game is still one of the most popular Final Fantasy games, aside from FF7.

Not many details were given at the conference, but the company has said that the PS Vita and PS3 versions of the game will both have the same specifications.

Are you looking forward to playing the remastered version of Final Fantasy X? What other Final Fantasy game remake would you like to see from Square Enix?

TGS 2011 – PlayStation Vita Releasing 2011 in Japan

To kick off Sony’s press conference at the Tokyo Game Show, the company announced that the PlayStation Vita will release on December 17, 2011 in Japan. The system is still slated to release next year in North America and Europe.

To coincide with the next-generation-handheld’s release, a number of high-profile games are expected to come to the system:

  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma
  • Katamari
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • God’s Eater 2
  • Wipeout
  • Shin Megami Tensei
  • Zone of the Enders
  • Metal Gear Solid

The PlayStation Vita’s game lineup keeps getting better and better. But will the system face the same problem of being a host for PS3 game ports? How will the games mentioned above take advantage of the system’s unique features and control configurations?

What types of games would you like to play on the Playstation Vita? Are you willing to pay prices of up to $39.99 for handheld games? Let us know in the comments section.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin PSP Bound

It’s official! Persona 2: Innocent Sin is finally coming to the PSP this fall. According to Atlus, the game is definitely coming to North America for the first time. The original release – for the PlayStation – was never localized for North American audiences.

It looks like this remake will not only give players the original game, but it will also include new missions, audio tracks, and an overhauled presentation fit for the new generation of gaming.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin will be priced at $40 and will release on September 20, 2011 at retail locations across North America.

Gamers who pre-order the game through Gamestop and Amazon.com will also recieve a limited-edition Persona series soundtrack from famed game composer Meguro Shoji.

PlayStation Vita To Support Cross Game Chat… But Not The PS3

Who would have thought that the PS3’s most requested feature is only possible on its upcoming handheld brother, the PlayStationVita?

Sony revealed the Vita’s full specifications last week at Gamescom; and according to Sony Worldwide studios President Shuhei Yoshida, the PlayStation Vita will ship with 512MB of RAM that will allow the system to actually support the much-wanted cross-game chat function with the Vita’s Party feature. He had also said that the Vita actually has more RAM than the PS3.

The PS3 on the other hand will never be able to do it as the system only has 256MB. And when a player starts a game, all of the system’s available memory is dedicated to that game, which negates any chance of multitasking. That means, there is literally no memory left to do any voice-chat outside of the game that is being played.

In an interview with Eurogamer, SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said this about PS3 cross game chat:

“Once a game gets RAM we never give it back, it’s not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact.”

Well, at least players can still enjoy the cross-game chat feature on their Vitas, since it’s never going to be added to the PS3 in the future.

Sony Announces PSP E-1000, Priced at $99

Just when you thought it was out, they pull it right back in. At its Gamescom press event in Germany, Sony announced a new SKU that will be added to the PlayStation Portable family. What differentiates this SKU from the others?

  • It’s at a $99 price point.
  • It doesn’t have Wi-Fi
  • It features a cool, black, matte finish (reminiscent of the PS3 Slim)
  • It only supports UMD Games

Those who thought the PSP was already dead were surprised when they heard that the new $99 PSP E-1000 will be released later this year. The PSP E-1000 will release with a number of PSP Essential titles like Invizimals, Eyepet, FIFA ’12, and other games.

The PSP E-1000 ditches the Wi-Fi, therefore saving Sony money in production and lowering the SKU’s price point to a low $99. That means you won’t be able to play SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 online. You’re basically stuck with single-player modes.

However the new SKU looks like a great buy for RPG fans as they will be able to play their favorite RPG’s like the Persona series on-the-go for cheaper. Those who prefer to buy their PSP games from PSN will have to download the titles using the Media Go software that connects PCs to the PSP.

DISCUSS:

If you do not have a PSP as of yet, will the $99 price point entice you to finally purchase the system? Or will you wait for the PlayStation Vita to come out?

Sony announced Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita at their Gamescom conference earlier today.

Sony Under Pressure To Cut PS Vita Price

Sony is under much pressure from analysts as well as the gaming public to cut the PlayStation Vita’s price in order to compete with Nintendo’s 3DS as well as the expanding mobile gaming market. Even at a stunning $250 price point, many gamers believe that the next-generation portable gaming system is still too expensive.

Nintendo cut its 3DS gaming system’s price to a low $169.99 a few months after its release. It seems the mobile gaming market is getting more and more competitive with Andriod- and iOS-handhelds selling more games at cheaper price points.

Bloomberg reported that Ace Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda believes that if Sony does not drop the price of its upcoming PS Vita, it could result in failure for the system.

“Gamers are increasingly anticipating Sony to lower prices, especially after the 3DS cut; Sony is under major pressure to cut the price of the Vita or risk a major failure.”

Despite all that, The Chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment Kaz Hirai stated last week that the PlayStation Vita will stay its course and will not drop lower its price point.

Do you think Sony should initiate a PS Vita price cut in order to compete with the Nintendo 3DS and the broader mobile gaming market?

Sony’s PS Vita to Miss Holiday 2011 Launch and Instead be Released in 2012 for the Better?

So here’s a news story that is making the rounds on the internet today. According to many news sources, Kazuo Hirai, executive deputy president of Sony Corp. and president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., stated during a press conference in Tokyo today that the PS Vita will miss the Christmas shopping season and debut instead sometime next year, leaving Japan to get the handheld gaming machine in 2011.

The PlayStation business is a key pillar, Hirai said. The video-game industry is evolving constantly. My expectation is for the PlayStation business to remain at the forefront of this very dynamic industry.

With the PlayStation Vita recently passing through the FCC for approval and Sony already taking pre-orders for the power handheld, these statements seem a tad odd and contradictory to Sony’s internal movements. If the PS Vita were to miss this Holiday season and instead opt for a Spring release instead where Sony generated more than 40% of its revenue last year, the company would surely miss out on a lot of potential sales from those who would gift the machine during the holiday (which was my avenue of choice for getting one, hint hint family). There is however, another take on this entire situation, outside of the fact that this could all be false and we might still see the PS Vita this year.

PlayStation Vita Passes Through FCC, Prepares for Fall US Launch

In the last two weeks, we’ve seen a slew of Sony devices pass through the FCC like the Xperia Mini, the Xperia Mini Pro, and a yet-to-be-announced Reader. Today’s FCC approval, though, should garner a little more interest from the gaming community, as the PlayStation Vita (WiFi edition) has passed through the FCC successfully. For those not familiar with US regulations, the FCC is the final stopping house for devices with wireless capabilities before they are allowed for public release. Generally, when a device passes through the FCC, it also indicates that all the given changes from the manufacturer have been made and that the device is ready for production. Today’s PlayStation Vita FCC approval also pegs the device for a Fall release, a date that Sony itself stated that they were aiming for which also aligns with the fact that the PS Vita is now up for pre-order on Sony’s site.

PS Vita Now Available for Pre-Order

In keeping with recent PS Vita news, Sony has officially listed both variations of the powerful gaming handheld for pre-order. $249 will grab you a PS Vita WiFi while $299 will land you in the WiFi+3G club. Alas, no release date is attached to either model yet though Sony is aiming for a holiday 2011 launch.

Sony Demos ‘Face Control’ on the PS Vita

The PS Vita, which is the successor to the PSP system from Sony, is looking more impressive with each new tech demo and announcement from the Japanese electronic maker. Already encompassing an impressive set of specs, Sony continues to show new and exciting features that the device is capable of. In this round, Sony is showing what the PS Vita can achieve via the front-facing camera and processing power. In the demo, two users are engaged in a video chat, but instead of simply displaying your face, you can select from a list of animated character avatars. What’s impressive from the demo is that the avatars are capable of mimicking your facial features in real time during the chat.

There is no particular announcement yet from Sony on how they wish to incorporate this technology or whether video chatting will even be available. However, seeing how the current PSP and PSPgo systems are capable of tapping into Skype, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to assume that a similar feature is coming to the PS Vita as well.
