Sony promised Android 5.0 Lollipop for its fleet of Xperia Z devices and they’ve continued to deliver. Just last week, Android Lollipop became available on the Xperia Z3 Dual, Z1,  Z Ultra and Xperia Z2 & Z2 Tablets. With most of their newer units having already received the latest OS, Sony is now turning its attention to some older phones like the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, and Xperia Z1 Compact. Specifically, the Android firmware arriving for said devices is 14.5.A.0.242 and brings with it Android 5.0.2. Sony’s most recently-announced devices, the Xperia Z4 Tablet and Xperia M4 Aqua, also ship with Android 5.0.2.

The latest smartphones to receive the newest OS update are the Xperia Z3 Dual, Xperia Z1, and Xperia Z Ultra. While Sony had previously announced Android 5.0 Lollipop for only Xperia Z devices, they would later revise that statement and include devices like the Xperia C3 and T2 Ultra.

Google Ends ‘Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition’

Sony_Z_Ultra_Google_Play_EditionLate last year, Google introduced the Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition. While the phablet was everything we’d come to know about the device that offers a 6.4-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) Triluminos display on a Qualcomm 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, and 4G LTE connectivity, there was one big difference. Google and not Sony would be handling the software on the device. This meant more timely Android updates and no custom Sony software like their highly liked Timescape skin. Pros and cons for a fantastic, albeit niche device.

Now all of that is coming to an end.

What made the Google Play Edition of the Xperia Z Ultra different than Sony’s own version was the bump to Android 4.4 Kitkat and a lack of the bundled software from Sony which were in place, swapped out for software from Google.

After being on the market for a few months, it seems that Sony is finally turning its attention towards the Xperia Z Ultra, their mega smartphone Phablet. As a recap, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra offers a 1080p 6.4-inch display that might as well be a small tablet. In fact, it’s likely that thought process which led Sony to announce a Wi-Fi only edition of the Xperia Z Ultra yesterday which in turn makes the unit a tablet. Now, Sony has enlisted Spider-Man and released a clever new marketing spot in Japan that is simple and to the point. Are you listening Sony’s marketing team in the US? The clever ad and the making of it can be found, after the jump.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Gains Wi-Fi Only Option

Xperia Z UltraThe Sony Xperia Z Ultra is a fantastic tablet smartphone phablet. Beautiful in design and rich in power. As a recap, the Android-powered phablet offers a monstrous 6.4-inch display with a 1080p resolution on Qualcomm’s latest 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, and 4G LTE connectivity. In fact, the unit is regarded highly enough that Google recently launched their own version, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition which is spec for spec the same as the original, minus any custom software that Sony offers on the Android unit. Seeing how big the unit is, Sony has decided to offer it with a Wi-Fi only option, making it a true tablet.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition Receives Android 4.4.2

Last week, something unexpected happened to Sony’s mobile line. Via the Google Play store, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play edition came up for sale with a $649 price tag. While exactly the same in the hardware department, this iteration of the device lacks any of Sony’s custom software and instead shipped with Android 4.4 Kitkat. While seeming like a good thing, this proved to have some problematic outcomes like the inability to uninstall apps which seems like a bizarre thing to ship a device with.  Thankfully, Android 4.4.2 for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play edition fixes all of that.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition Arrives on Play Store

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is not quite a smartphone with its 6.4-inch 1080 display and yet it’s not quite a tablet which generally offer a 7-inch display like the iPad Mini. If anything, the Xperia Z Ultra is designed to compete with devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note series which houses a 5.5-inch display. Now the device is making its way to the US market, thanks to Google.

Nexus 7 vs Xperia Ultra Z

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is an interesting device. Not quite a smartphone with its 6.4-inch 1080 display and yet it’s not quite a tablet with smaller units like the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini offering a 7-inch display. If anything, the Xperia Z Ultra (pictured right), which I’ll call a Phablet, was designed to compete with other Phablets out there like the Samsung Galaxy Note series which houses a 5.5-inch display. So how does the Xperia Z Ultra size up against the recently released Nexus 7 tablet from Google/Asus? After the jump, we have plenty of pictures comparing the two devices.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra to Launch in UK on September 13th

Sony Xperia Z Ultra in HandIt’s a smartphone, it’s a tablet, no, it’s a phablet! The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is one of those devices that it’s either everything you’ve wanted or you’re left scratching your head at it’s 6.4-inch display that is too small for a tablet and too big to be a phone. Either way, no matter where you stand, come this September 13th, the Xperia Z Ultra will be launching in the UK. You can expect to find in from Amazon UK, and retailers like Clove and Handtec. The high end device will run on Qualcomm’s latest 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, and 4G LTE connectivity and is expected to carry a £600 price tag.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Gets Approved by FCC

Sony Xperia Z Ultra FCC

If the device in question has any form of wireless functionality, you can bet that it will pass through the FCC before its release. While the FCC has been a great source of leaked information in the past, this time the government regulatory arm was able to keep its files hidden long enough for Sony to actually announce the product before revealing it. So can we learn from the FCC documentation of the Xperia Z Ultra?

Sony Announces Xperia Z Ultra with 6.4-inch 1080p Display

Sony Xperia Z Ultra

As expected, Sony today unveiled the Xperia Z Ultra, a smartphone/tablet hybrid which is squarely aimed at taking on the Samsung Galaxy Note series. The massive, yet extremely thin and light device packs a monstrous 6.4-inch display with a 1080p resolution versus competitor units which traditionally offer a 720p display. With a near tablet sized screen, the Xperia Z Ultra is also powered by a tablet like processor which has the unit running on Qualcomm’s latest 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, and 4G LTE connectivity. After the jump, we break down the Xperia Z Ultra even further.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Images Leaked Ahead of it’s Unveil Tomorrow

Sony Xperia Z Ultra 1For those not savvy in the fantastic name scheming that Sony is using which makes all of their products sound the same (Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z, Xperia ZA), the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the latest to join the ranks. Not be confused with the Xperia Tablet Z or the Xperia Z, their flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z Ultra is the companies first attempt at a phablet. Seeing how Samsung has had some success with the Samsung Galaxy Note series (though we’ve never heard of actual sales numbers for the series), Sony is looking to jump in the larger phone but not quite tablet segment with the Xperia Z Ultra which is expected to be unveiled tomorrow. For those who can’t wait, we have a few more shots for you, after the jump.
