Sony Announces LTE Xperia GX and Xperia SX. We Have Specs and Pics

Despite the Sony Xperia Arc never officially coming to the US and Xperia S still in limbo for a US release, Sony has announced the Xperia GX and Xperia SX for Japan. Despite a name change, the Xperia GX is the successor to the Xperia Arc, Sony’s former flagship phone in the land of the rising sun. With the new name, Sony can now better fit the device in their current name scheme which includes smartphones like the Xperia ionXperia SXperia P, and Xperia U while their tablet strategy consists of the Tablet S and Tablet P. So what has Sony included in the Xperia GX to keep it as their flagship device? How about a brand new 13-megapixel camera with CMOS sensor to star things off with which of course can record in 1080p. Set to ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor will keep things smooth for you. Other Xperia GX specs include:

  • 4.6-inch (720 x 1196) Display
  • 16GB Internal Memory
  • Rumored Processor (MSM8960 S4 Snapdragon)
  • 3G/4G LTE
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • HDMI Out

Seeing how this phone is for Japan only, infrared connectivity, mobile wallet and a mobile TV will of course be included as well, giving us Westerners an idea of what the future is like. After the jump, lets talk about the Xperia SX and additional pictures.

Not quite a flagship phone, the Xperia SX, the successor to the Xperia S will still carry punch with some nice updates to bring the phone to more 2012 standards like 4G LTE. The Xperia SX will also boast a smaller megapixel count, 8MP for those playing at home which is the same in the current model. The internal processor will also see a bump to a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor though its unclear if it will be based on the same chipset as the Xperia GX. Other Xperia SX specs include:

  • 3.7-inch (540 x 960) Display
  • 8GB Internal Memory
  • 3G/4G LTE
  • Bluetooth 4.0

Of course, like its big brother, infrared connectivity, mobile wallet and a mobile TV will be standard options. So is also once again bringing the WALKMAN name into the mix with three new apps. As Sony puts it, the WALKMAN app “integrates signature high quality audio technologies such as clear stereo, clear bass, VPT surround sound, manual equalizer and xLOUD™ with new innovative ways to play, discover and recommend music.

Those who’ve been wanting a better way to manage their photos and videos will surely find some comfort in Sony’s new ‘Album’ app which help you sort and view your photos and videos in new ways. The app will also you to share your media on Facebook with easy commenting.

The last of three apps is simply dubbed ‘Movies’ which will allow for smoother playback of HD videos. Sony also claims that the app features an “intelligent database search to discover more info about the movie for a rich and immersive experience,” whatever that means.

Both phones are expected to ship this Summer in Japan with no word yet on an international followup.
