New Sony Vaio P Acts As PS3 Keyboard

So we were teased about the new Vaio P and before, we had mentioned that Sony was looking to add Remote Play connectivity to it’s Vaio series as well. The first of this we saw was in recently yesterday announced Sony Vaio P which feature the Remote Play function. Now comes some news out of Japan that these units can act as a bluetooth keyboard for PS3 users. I’m not gonna lie, I don’t think this is what anybody envisioned as the Remote Play functionality and I don’t mean this in a good way. I’m sure more functionality will trickle out but this is one of those things where we wished Sony didn’t use it’s engineering cash to develop. This would be a much better function on their upcoming Experia series. Why? Well I have my iPhone on me all the time and so it’s convenient for me to use it on my AppleTV. But if my MacBook hooked up to it as well, I would never use it because I would need to have a bulky (granted the Vaio P is very small) computer next to me, just so I can type in some stuff…Come on Sony, either wow us with something useful or don’t bother and spend the cash elsewhere. We say it for you.

Android 2.1 Coming To The Sony Ericsson X10 Family

Remember those sexy Sony Ericsson X10 units and it’s little sister, the X10 mini? Well they currently are using the lackluster Android 1.6 but all of this is set to change in Q4 of this year when Sony Ericsson will release Android 2.1 for the entire X10 family. Keep in mind that for Sony, Q4 2010 starts in September.

Ultra Mobile Vaio = New Vaio P

Yesterday we had an article about a teaser from the Sony Japan site about a new Ultra Mobile Vaio that had the design of a paperclip. I have to point out that indeed I was wrong and it’s not a tri-fold design. But damn, when you do hold the new Vaio P from the side, it does look like a paperclip.

So what does this new Vaio P do that the old one didn’t? It seems like a lot actually. The features that stand out are the built in GPS, inbuilt 3G and an accelerometer and touchscreen sides on the LCD. This also seems to be the first new Vaio with the PS3 Remote Play feature we had talked about before. Look for this unit to hit store shelves in June with a $200 price drop, bringing it down to $799. Also new, lots of colors!

New Ultra Mobile VAIO On The Way

This is one of those stories that there really isnt a whole lot of information about, except the above image and the the announcement on the Sony VAIO Japanese page about a new ultra mobile unit. The only tidbit that seems clear to me is that this will incorporate some form of tri-fold design. But heck, I could be wrong. Expect more news on this, whenever there is more news.

Vodaphone To Get Xperia X10 Mini Soon?

During the Mobile World Congress, Sony Ericsson debuted its Xperia X10 Mini. The X10 Mini comes with a QWERTY keyboard and runs Android 1.6 though this could change by the time the unit launches. The internal guts are running on a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 with WiFi, Bluetooth, a touchscreen, and a pack-in 2GB microSD card. A particular feature that Sony touts on this unit is their Timescape feature that enables all your communications with contacts to be accessed in one place making it simple to access to call history, Facebook, Twitter, messaging, which reminds us of the Microsoft Kin phones (or Project Pink). These units were then announced for a 2010 Q2 launch. Now, the Xperia 10 Mini is being shown off in a Vodaphone catalogue. Is this an error, or are they right around the corner for those in Europe? There is no news on a US launch, but they are indeed intended for us. Also, expect the usual suspects to carry it; AT&T and maybe T-Mobile.

Should You Buy the Sony Dash?

I have to first start out this review by saying that unlike the other big blogs, we were not given a Sony Dash to review. So today, I headed on over to Best Buy where I bought a Sony Dash and I point this out to show our love here for Sony products and our commitment to you, our readers. Also, as to be expected, it took nearly 30 minutes to get what I wanted at Best Buy because god forbid anyone having a clue about products.

Ok. I’ve now spent about a good two to three hours with this product and I must say that I get it. I see what Sony was going for and what that final vision was. I’ve read on random blogs and on Facebook and such that the question is: why get the Sony Dash when there is an iPad? First, this is completely bogus. One unit is a table while the other is a stationary unit for the house that also has apps. In the end, these are two completely different units. The idea of the Sony Dash is the following: This unit can be in your bedroom, in your kitchen or wherever else. From there, the Sony Dash can display your Twitter and Facebook feed, it can show you your stocks, weather and news and even stream Youtube, Netflix and Amazon on Demand videos. Music streaming is brought to you buy Pandora and few other companies. I must also point out that Pandora does run on the background as well so while your Twitter feed might be up, you can rock away to your Pandora. Awesome.

PSN Videos Now Playable On Your PC

Here is a little interesting tidbit. Today, I jumped on Media Go, which is Sony’s version of iTunes so to speak for the PSP. The service allows for you to add Music, Photos and Videos to your PSP. The Media Go Software will also talk with iTunes and grab files from it (Even over a network; my iTunes library is on my Mac and it was able to grab music from it no problem). To my surprise, when I logged into the Media Go software today, where you also have access to the PSN store to download content for your PC, I found a new feature.

Sony has now given you the ability to watch your downloaded videos, which were originally meant for your PSP and PSPgo exclusively, on your PC as well. This of course is a very welcome feature. If we have the files on our computer, why not be able to play them on there as well? In iTunes, the video content you download is not just meant for your iPhone or iPod. Those who ran the update will note that the Media Go software also asked for a new update which, besides the random enhancement and bug fixes, also adds compatibility for some Sony Ericsson phones as well. The reason this interests me is that like I’ve always said, PSN needs to be at the core of Sony’s business model. Its laptops, cellphones and other mobile devices all need to have access to the content on there. This not only makes PSN more valuable when you know your content is good for 10 platforms versus 2 (PSP and PS3), but also makes your products more valuable as it gives them an ever-growing content service.

While all these features and ideas are great, I do have one small caveat with the Media Go platform. Why is there not a Mac version? I mean, seriously. Do Mac users not buy PSP and PS3’s and other Sony products? The majority of my media is on my Mac it would be nice to be able to just dock my PSPgo and PSP-1000 with my Mac. Come on, Sony.

My Current PSP Setup:

Sony Dash Specs

I’ve been getting quite a few requests for the specs of the new Sony Dash. Currently, on Sony’s own website, there aren’t many specs at all. Still, the few videos they do have sure made me want one. After some digging, here they are. Hit the jump for full details.

New Marketing Strategy For Sony

Starting Monday (today), Sony is going to kick off a new year long ad campaign that includes many of its portfolio stars, starting off with Taylor Swift, showing off the Cyber-shot DSC-TX7. This will be a series of star-studded spots that Sony ( SNE – news – people ) plans to roll out this year, as a part of a $100-million-plus TV, print and digital ad campaign. Each ad will feature a Sony-affiliated celebrity to pitch its electronic products, such as its 3-D television and its e-reader. The idea of this new campaign is that instead of focusing in on the many products that Sony makes, it will aim for a particular market and let them know of the product. For example, in 2008 Sony spent nearly $5 billion on their global ad campaigns that ranged from laptops to DVD players.

First, I have to say that I’m floored by this. I’m wondering if of that $5 billion, $4.9 billion was spent outside of the states. Ask any Playstation owner and they will tell you that Sony has had no air presence whatsoever; Microsoft has dominated the airwaves with its Xbox ads. No matter what show or channel you watch, when they produced a big game (i.e. Halo or Gears of War), they had endless commercials running. Most of all, the sheer number of commercials and TV shows that the 360 is in as product placement is insane. This of course has been something that has hurt the PS3 and the PSP and thus, their software sales. I will give it to Sony though for their efforts with Kevin Butler in the past year. Those ads are fantastic and hilarious. My issue in this case is: where were they the other 3 years? I also mention this because the PlayStation brand is one important aspect of their business but Sony is fighting off too many players in too many markets. In the TV market you see Samsung commercials left and right. Computers and cell phones and it’s either iPhone/Droid or MacBook/HP. And for cameras, Canon and Nikon. Yet, we never see any form of Sony add showing us off their products.

Sony Ericsson Posts Surprise Profit

It’s no secret that the Sony Ericsson team has been in trouble the last few years. They have no clear strategy and a wide support of OSes, including Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android and some in-house Sony OSes as well. Regardless, Sony Ericsson posted a €21 million, besting analysts who were expecting a €128 million loss. This marks their first profit since Q2 of 2008. SE managed to bump the average handset selling price to €134 on 10.5 million sold compared to the 14.5 million sold at an average of €120 a year prior thanks, in part, to the launch of its X10 and Vivaz. However, all of this comes at a cost of a decreased global market share of 5% to now 4%. Also to help with this profit was a slashing of employees and some facility closing so this might end up being a short term win. However, we hope that this gives Sony Ericsson enough time to be formulating what we hope is a strategy behind closed doors and will begin some form of road map and not random headsets. A starting point for them would be to leverage the Playstation Brand and PSN Network? A PSP Phone with access to all PSN content and PSN friends list? That would put them right in par with the Windows 7 Series Phone Xbox Live integration and the new gaming network that will be introduced in iPhone OS 4.0.

More Affordable Sony Vaios On The Way

When Sony launched its Vaio brand in the late 1990’s there was excitement in the air of the tech industry. There was no Apple dominance or design at the time and there weren’t many big players in the laptop market yet. This meant that Sony was able to leverage its brand name, quality, and design to come out with some beautiful units. Even as late as 2005, Sony laptops have been thinner then others, with better screens, battery life and quality than the comparable HP or Toshiba computers. On top of that, Sony always had design on their side as they made sure they were more elegant, catchy and edgy than their competition. However, starting as recently as the early 2000’s, their growth in the computer market began to change. The Vaio Desktops all but disappeared (now, there exists only one series of touchscreen, all-in-one desktops that I will soon write about). This has left them with their laptops.

First, we have to recognize that this isn’t a bad thing. The downfall of desktops has been a tech industry trend as laptops get more portable, affordable and powerful. As a society, we no longer want to be attached to one room with our computers. We can therefore forgive Sony’s fall in desktop production, albeit unplanned on their end. This brings us back to the laptop, the growth sector. Anybody who has used an HP laptop in the past knows how unreliable they were and how lacking they were in any form of design. Those who have used Toshiba laptops are all well aware of the design factor and how clunky those units were. Yet in the opposite world, Sony would provide design and form factor. As laptops got cheaper, it seemed like Sony did not want to recognize this change in the market. People began seeing a big price difference and no longer wished to pay a premium price for the Sony laptops. But as the prices of laptops continued to fall, the other players began to step up to the plate as well. HP began to offer more designs and flair to their units to attract new and younger buyers at a much lower price while Sony still offered only premium units. While there is a market for premium units, when 90% of the company’s laptops are catered to that ever-shrinking market, we can easily see the decline of Sony’s market share in the laptop category. The other 10% of laptops Sony offered seemed like stepchild laptops. They had no real design or grace; they were just cheaper and slower while HP, Dell and Toshiba offered faster, more attractive designs with better prices.

Now comes news that Sony is looking to provide more affordable Vaio laptops. According to the recent announcement from Sony Vaio’s Business Group, Vaio Laptops will have two divisions; the division one laptops which will be designed and manufactured by Sony, and the division two laptops which will be designed and manufactured by the third-parties and yet bear the same VAIO name. Of course, the minute I hear that, I think of products produced in China and worry about quality control, something that Sony and the Vaio brand prides itself on. Sony has gone on record and stated that The quality criteria itself is no different between division number one and division number two. Instead, the difference will be in the technology. We will include new technology [such as the latest processors] in division number one first, and then we can learn and we can get the know-how, then we can transfer [the technology] to the products coming from division two.

Although at first glance it might be easy to bash Sony over this, this might just be what Sony needs to reenter the growing market. We all saw how Sony entered the netbook market with the Vaio P and although it is a fantastic unit, $900 is not what a netbook is worth. That market is looking for a $300-$500 unit. Plus, the PC segment in sad truth at many times is not a market that is looking for extremely high quality products, as many consumers are more price aware. This isn’t to say there isn’t a premium market for PC laptops and that there isn’t a community of PC users who want/use better computers, but that the majority of growth is in the $300-$700 range. If Sony can successfully keep its costs down and offer competitive units in the lowered price range, this can be a nice new entry point and growth target for Sony. I also don’t believe that this means junkier units. Sony needs to keep a tight control on its Division Two units to make sure that the quality of their units, both externally and internally, are up to par. We have to remember that the highest ranked quality laptop producer out there is none other than Apple and all of their units, although designed in the States, are produced in China. Sony needs the same strategy. New bold and exciting designs, competitive features and an affordable price can help them get there. If it takes a two-division strategy to do this, then sign me up.

Sony Ericsson To Use Android 2.0

At a launch event over in Taiwan, SE Asia-Pacific’s vice president of marketing Peter Ang was quoted as saying that Sony Ericsson is hard at work on their next generation smartphone which is said to be based on Android 2.0. The good news here is that at least Sony is working on an open technology that gives them full control, but is an open platform that can easily expand, adapt and grow without being tied to a particular format. The bad news of course is that Android 1.5 isn’t even out yet, let alone 2.0. With that in mind, I highly doubt that, behind the scenes, Android 2.0 is so far along in production. I see this as meaning only one thing, don’t expect these guys before fall of 2010, easily.

The big problem here is that Sony Ericsson is hurting bad. Profits have dropped 50% over and over and the rumors keep coming that the two companies may split.  All this just puts added pressure on a company that’s on the edge. Now, the good news is though that Sony is at least developing these phones and if they can come out with something that’s really different and maybe part of a larger plan, they have a chance at redeeming themselves and establishing themselves as a game changer. The reason is this: the iPhone wasn’t the first smart phone but it was the first one for the masses and this truly set up for the growth that the smart phone sector is seeing. A lot has came out since then, but it was again the G1 that gained attention and now the Palm Pre is earning its place. This means that the majority of people are just starting to transition to the smartphone market. As good as the Sony X1 is in the Mp3 market, I feel like that market is already fully owned by Apple and they are starting to go towards the smartphone market (Why have an iPod and a phone in your pocket when you can have one device that does both?). If the smartphone market is truly just beginning to grow, then Sony is still not late to the party, as long as they bring a product that’s part of a community of Sony services, yet is open and part of a longer term plan.

Sony Ericsson Satio To Launch In October

Sony_Ericcson_Satio_1

Earlier this year, during the Mobile World Congress, Sony Ericsson showed off a new phone, code named at the time Idou. Well, today comes news that the Idou will be called the Satio and will launch sometime in October. Some key features of this phone include:

  • 640 x 350, 3.5-inch touch screen
  • 12.1 Megapixels (take that Palm Pre and iPhone combined)
  • Dual-Band HSPA
  • Xenon Flash
  • MicroSD expansion with an 8GB in the box (Is Sony looking to get rid of the Memory Stick Micro?)

Look for this unit in  October then in Black, Silver or Bordeaux. No price point yet though. As always, hit the MagicGate for more shots. (reminds me of my Cybershot T-300)

Facial Recognition From Sony Ericsson, Plays Your Moods Song

Sony_Ericsson_FacialRecog_s

A new patent was recently discovered from Sony Ericsson that while listening to our music, your device will change the song depending on your mood. The example is based on the idea that while you hold your Smart Phone, through the camera, a picture of your face will be taken, scanned and pending on your mood, a corresponding song will play. Of course as all patents go, I wouldn’t give this a second thought for something like this could be many years out or something that may just never work.

Sony Vaio P Ditches Vista, Hugs XP

Sony_VaioP_WindowsXP

Well it seems like 3 years into the launch and everybody is still trying to find a way to ditch Vista. Originally launching with Windows Vista, the Sony Vaio netbook P series will now rock Windows XP (Home) when it relaunches under VGN-P50. Also new will be a standard 2.0GHZ Atom Z550 processor, as apposed to the previous 1.33GHZ. You can now also select up to a 256GB SSD (Sold State Drive). Prices will be kept at the traditional $900. Look for a Japanese June 6th launch. No word on the US but I’m assuming were not far behind.

I must say, I’d love to get one of these units because between being on my full setup at the house and being on the go with the iPhone that has my Twitter and WordPress Apps, it would be nice to have something in between to work on this site with thats small and is super portable. So if your bored one day Sony and have a spare Vaio P sitting around it, Id love to get my hands on one, plus, it would make a great PR gesture! So….Just Contact Us ya?
