DC Brings Its Comics To PSP

DC is throwing its support behind the PSP and will now be offering its comics in the Playstation Comic Store, joining the likes of Sony Comics, Marvel and others. DC will be starting off with 80 titles; there will be more coming in the future. DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee went on to announce that there will be: “actually a fairly wide and diverse offering of kids comics like Tiny Titans, DC core titles such as Batman: Hush and critically acclaimed classics like Neil Gaiman’s Sandman”.

Lee also confirmed that the prices of the comics will range from $1 to $3. For those who want to try out this service, there will be several free issues and samples, including a 10-page preview of “Superman No. 700,” stories from “Batman: Black and White” and the first installments of “Bayou,” “Fringe,” “Mirror’s Edge,” and “Resistance.”

Some other launch titles include:

“Batman: Hush,” “Green Lantern: Rebirth,” “Fables: Legends in Exile” and “Planetary: All Over the World,” “Other Stories,” “Superman/Batman,” “Resistance,” “Free Realms” and “God of War.”

PSN: Warhawk Expansion "Fallen Star" For $1.99

If you have never played Warhawk on the Playstation 3, you have been missing out on a gem of a game. I cannot express how much fun this game is and how much it has grown from its start. It is now boasting the mighty Warhawks, Tanks, Jeeps, Dropships, APC Units, Jetpacks and more. Best of all, all these units can run around the same time in a lag free multiplayer that still to me stands as the best.

In honor of the 4th of July, Sony will be having a tournament from July 1st till July 5th and for those who want to practice a little bit or just dont have the latest expansion, Sony is dropping the price for the Fallen Star Expansion to $1.99 starting today. Thats 75% off! If you’re game, let me know. PSN: Fusion_Id.

Playstation 4 Teaser Trailer

I already know what this is so let’s have some fun with it. What do you guys think?

I Don't Use My PSPgo Because I'm Cheap

On October 1st, 2009, I was a giddy person. It was the PSPgo launch date and I had my unit already paid for and only needed the UPS man to bring it to my door. It was a little opposite of the PSP-1000 launch as I waited in line that day at a GameStop store. The original PSP was one of my favorite gadgets. Before I had an iPod, that little guy would hold my music, I had a load of UMD movies and  had downloaded Anime on my memory stick and a load of games. Fast forward the PSPgo launch: I received my unit, fired it up and was in love. I immediately downloaded Grand Turismo and a few other games and took my PSPgo with me everywhere. But I noticed I kept going back to my PSP-1000 and it was for the simple reason that I still needed to beat Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7. Because of lack of option of playing Crisis Core on my PSPgo, my PSP-1000 had me in. But now I owned this beautiful unit and I couldn’t even give it the attention it needed. Soon I noticed that Amazon had a fantastic deal on Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Of course, this was on the UMD version, but for $20, how could I say no?

It’s with this that I noticed that the reason I don’t use my PSPgo is because I’m cheap! Seriously, one of the reasons I have been playing my original PSP more than my PSPgo is because I can go on Amazon and get cheaper prices or sales on games. Plus, at the end of the day, it will be the same game because yes the PSPgo is sexier and has a better screen, but the game itself is and will be the same. So while I do love my PSPgo, I don’t want to pay extra for games when I don’t have to.  Also, the whole point of digital distribution is that there is no shipping, no packaging, no producing and booklets and boxes, so does it not make sense for the digital version to be cheaper? Plus, the big worry with game publishers right now is secondhand selling and how they don’t get a cut of that market. Well have the UMD version for $40 which can go be sold again and the PSN version for $30 because I cannot share those and sell that copy.

That is ultimately not the only solution. Sony needs to give a retailer like Amazon the capability go also put the PSN versions on sale as well as the UMD and give the buyers a choice (remember, there is a PSN store on Amazon as well for those who want to gift games or just buy them some other way). So to wrap this up, I’m not against digital downloads. I own 2 iPhones (soon 3) and my iPad, and I have nearly 30 PSN games on the PS3, but when I can get the same game for cheaper on the PSP as opposed to the PSPgo version and they are of the same quality, capitalism and supply and end demand indicate that the PSPgo will flop and so far, its been true, sadly.

Here’s a funny thing: in order to take the picture I did for the profile, I had to plug my PSPgo back in and charge it up and during its initial setup, I felt very guilty about this post and the lack of attention I have given that unit and the lack of marketing and attention Sony has given it as well because it feels so damn nice in the hand. Dammit Sony!

Sony's 30 Best Playstation Network Games

I found a great article from GamePro listing the top 30 games for the Playstation Network.  I’ve purchased some on the list but this reminded me of the great titles that I want to purchase and play.   Two games that didn’t make the list that I think are worthy are:  PAIN and PixelJunk Racer.  PAIN is a very comedic game where you literally launch a character in the air and as he falls try to create the most destruction and damage to him; check it out and get a good laugh.  PixelJunk has four fantastic games exclusively on the PSN and all but PixelJunk Racer were included on the list so don’t forget about racer!

I’ve spotlighted three PSN exclusive games on the list I’ve really really enjoyed

  • Echochrome: M.C. Escher is my favorite artist and I can’t help but to think of him during this puzzle game.  Echochrome consists of over 56 levels with simple looking puzzles that get increasingly difficult as you guide your player through them.  It’s all about point of view, angles and connecting walk paths for your player.  You can also challenge friends by creating your own levels.

  • The Last Guy: This game has a  simple concept of guiding survivors of a monster-apocalypse through large cities to safety.  Bigger and bigger groups come your way in need of saving keep up the challenge and I love the birds eye view the game is played in.  This game is fun, addicting with fun music.   Check out the demo that’s available on the PSN.

  • Pixel Junk Monsters: This was one of the first PSN games I bought and I remember numerous late night session playing it.  I love this game.   The concept is your basic tower defense protecting home base from waves of monsters.  As you move throughout the map levels get harder with more waves and stronger monsters.   What’s great is the variety of defense towers you have, some to be unlocked, and the ability to power them up by ‘dancing’ in them.  It’s such a great game that I recommend you buy, I don’t think you’ll be dissapointed.  Also, there’s an “encore” expansion pack that adds another 15 levels if you feel you’ve outplayed the game and the levels are very hard.

Sony Bringing HBO To PSN

Sony’s Playstation Network is now offering original content from HBO.  Users have the option of purchasing single episodes or full seasons. Available immediately are the first two seasons of “True Blood”, “Eastbound and Down“, “Big Love” andEntourage”. Other shows will also be available from HBO’s backlog such as “The Sopranos”, “Sex and the City” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm”.

I like the idea of having HBO on PSN and possibly other premium networks like Showtime hopping on board with Playstation, but the cost seems to be a bit high. Newer shows like “True Blood” will cost $2.99 an episode, and it’s been said that most shows will cost .99 cents per episode. For myself, I would not buy complete seasons on the Playstation Network. I love having the box set of a season on Blu-ray and have it on a shelf accessible in person. I would, however, see myself buying an episode or two if I happened to miss it a certain week. This was a great move by both parties to help the declining DVD/Blu-ray sales and I hope more networks will provide their shows on the PSN soon.

Sony Launching $70 Premium PSN At E3?

I bought my PS3 on launch date not only because I’m a huge fan of Sony, but because  it includes a Blu-ray player, great exclusive games, and bluetooth controllers. Still, a big selling point for me was also the free Playstation Network.  The PSN is the online hub for downloadable content, games and the ability to play multiplayer online (which I do a lot of).

There has been rumors for a while that Sony will start to charge for online play like Xbox does which is very disappointing. Although nothing is official, this rumor isn’t bad.

Word is on June 15th at E3, Sony will unveil their new premium features for the PSN which will cost approximately $70. The good news is that no one will be forced to upgrade (like we are with firmware) leaving online play and all the current features still free. YES. I’m sure happy about that. Right now it’s unknown what the premium features are but sources have mentioned two. A free PSN game per month and possible music streaming. If rumors are true we will find out officially from Sony  at E3.

I think this is a great move from Sony that will excite players and give them the option of a paid or non-paid PSN. Would you go premium?

PSN Videos Now Playable On Your PC

Here is a little interesting tidbit. Today, I jumped on Media Go, which is Sony’s version of iTunes so to speak for the PSP. The service allows for you to add Music, Photos and Videos to your PSP. The Media Go Software will also talk with iTunes and grab files from it (Even over a network; my iTunes library is on my Mac and it was able to grab music from it no problem). To my surprise, when I logged into the Media Go software today, where you also have access to the PSN store to download content for your PC, I found a new feature.

Sony has now given you the ability to watch your downloaded videos, which were originally meant for your PSP and PSPgo exclusively, on your PC as well. This of course is a very welcome feature. If we have the files on our computer, why not be able to play them on there as well? In iTunes, the video content you download is not just meant for your iPhone or iPod. Those who ran the update will note that the Media Go software also asked for a new update which, besides the random enhancement and bug fixes, also adds compatibility for some Sony Ericsson phones as well. The reason this interests me is that like I’ve always said, PSN needs to be at the core of Sony’s business model. Its laptops, cellphones and other mobile devices all need to have access to the content on there. This not only makes PSN more valuable when you know your content is good for 10 platforms versus 2 (PSP and PS3), but also makes your products more valuable as it gives them an ever-growing content service.

While all these features and ideas are great, I do have one small caveat with the Media Go platform. Why is there not a Mac version? I mean, seriously. Do Mac users not buy PSP and PS3’s and other Sony products? The majority of my media is on my Mac it would be nice to be able to just dock my PSPgo and PSP-1000 with my Mac. Come on, Sony.

My Current PSP Setup:

Heavy Rain Hits 1 Million in Sales

PlayStation 3 exclusive title: Heavy Rain has hit the one million mark in worldwide sales.  PSN blog said, “Praised by media for its gripping storyline, thought-provoking themes, innovation and engaging example of non-linear storytelling, it’s no surprise that more than a million gamers agree.”

From playing the downloadable demo on the PSN store, I could instantly tell that this was such a unique game. I purchased the game last month but embarrassed to say I have yet to play it. I plan to start it this week! Reviews say the game starts out slow but if I stick with it (which I will) it’s like nothing I’ve experienced before in a game. The demo alone has different outcomes.  Every decision you make, big or small in the game, effects what happens to the characters and story. You swap gameplay between four characters in the game and if one dies, no game over; you just don’t see their side of the story. Also, there’s over 20 different endings in the game! Each character has their own set of endings depending on your decisions and who died.  That’s pretty mind-boggling to me.

Has anyone played Heavy Rain yet? I can’t wait to see what path and ending awaits me; hopefully I can keep all of my characters alive.

Sony Working On PSP Music Store? More Like PSN

PSN_MusicStoreFull Concept

A few websites are running with the news that Sony is looking to create a PSP music store. The theory goes that with the eventual death of the UMD drive on the PSP and the potential integration of build in flash drive and added Memory Stick expansion slot, Sony is looking to turn the PSP into an iPod Touch competitor, much like the touch is competing with the PSP/DSi.

Although I dont doubt such intensions, there is one piece of this story that I reject and feel like everybody is missing. Why would Sony just create a PSP music store? Do we forget that the download service was truly born for Sony on the PS3? (we will forget Sony Connect and such). And that at last E3, the movie side of the PSN store was born. So why would Sony suddenly just limit their music to the PSP? I think that the PSP is part of the puzzle, sure but this should be a PSN Music service. We must not forget that and I know im beating a dead horse, but Sony is a music company as well. Plus, Sony makes many devices like their new X1000 Walkman that is designed to head to head with the iPod Touch. So why limit the reach of your audience. It’s not like there is a separate iTunes music store for the iPod Touch vs. other Apple Products. In fact, the potential success of iTunes is the story of, sell music at a loss, but make the hardware like AppleTV, iPod Touch more appealing.

Sony must do the same thing with their PSN store if they are going to survive the next shift in the electronic industry. Just like how the PSN store made its way to the PSP, the Music side must a PSN service that Sony equipment can will tap into. Not a hardware to hardware specific service. Plus, wouldn’t those who use such a service (consumer) but happier knowing such a service will work with 15 of their Sony devices verses 1? And more so, what better way to lure content provider by saying that we have a reach of 80 Million (PSP+PS3, but hopefully, much more Sony devices in the future) then just 50 million (PSP users).

PS3 Firmware 2.7 is Live

I just turned on my PS3 and firmware 2.7 is indeed live. Some of the key features are:

  • Chat rooms with up to 16 people where you can have live chats while playing a game.
  • File sending has been bumped from 1mb to 3mb.
  • You can now backup your downloaded movies on an external hard drive and delete them from your main system and transfer them.

So update away!

PS3 Gains Steam In Japan

sony_sales_3_13

It seems that in the last few weeks, the PS3 again has been gaining steam in Japan as this chart will show that for the first time in a long time, both the PSP and PS3 sit on top of the charts for the 2nd week in a row. With that in mind, I dont want to turn this site into a gaming site as there is more then a dozen sites with a lot more resources at their disposal to do that, but the PlayStation brand is indeed an important part of Sonys portfolio and I believe to the future of the company, especially with the implementation of the XMB (Cross Media Bar) and PSN (PlayStation Network). Part of the reasoning behind this is a few new major titles out for the system, something that the PS3 lacked in the first two years. I truly believe that Sony on every level shouldnt worry about Nintendo and indeed have its cross hairs on Microsoft, especially in Japan and Europe where Sony has always had a huge dominance or it can risk losing a generation of Gamers.

  • PSP – 59,568
  • PlayStation 3 – 39,835
  • Nintendo DSi – 32,102
  • Wii – 16,560
  • Xbox 360 – 14,994
  • Nintendo DS Lite – 11,240
  • PlayStation 2 – 4,954

PSN Achieves 14 Million Users. A New Game Plan for Sony

On the two year anniversary of the PS3, PlayStation director of hardware marketing John Koller has announced that PSN (PlayStation Network, other wise, known as your friends list and the PlayStation Store) has hit the milestone of 14 million users. What makes this more astonishing is that 4.2 million more users then just one month ago.  John Joller went on to say:

PlayStation Network has truly hit its stride with unique downloadable games and a video delivery service featuring movies, TV shows, and original programming that you can watch in HD with your PS3, or bring with you on your PSP. And with 14 million active accounts and 273 million pieces of content downloaded, we know that you’re thirsting for this digital entertainment.

What makes this piece of news even more exciting for PlayStation fans, but more so for Sony should be that this puts them neck in neck with Microsoft’s X-Box Live thats had a year head start on the 360 and user wise, was available during the entire lifespan of the Xbox/PS2 era where Sony offered no such service.

Part of this winning strategy I believe is due to the value of PSN and that value is that its free. Unlike X-Box Live where there is a $60 yearly charge that keeps alot of users offline and away from content that they might wish to pay for, aka profits. We have also seen Sony now offer the PSN store on the PSP systems where with a Wi-Fi connection or through their PC (No Mac support yet, wth Sony), they can download and purchase content. Although currently no buddy list and messengering system is available for the PSP, it is a good start.

I am personally a huge believer in PSN because I see it being part of a further strategy that can really set Sony apart then the X-Box 360 and Wii, but also help Sony catchup to services like X-Box Live and iTunes where Sony’s Connect service failed.

First, I believe that its great that Sony offers the PSN store through the web for the PSP (although in a new update, you can access it from Sony’s PSP Manager program but you have to purchase that). But to really capture the side entertainment functionality of the PSP, Sony needs to offer that program for free. Instead of people download other free programs, create a system and then sell content through it. Like iTunes. The iPod is only as great as its content provider and Apple has done an amazing job with iTunes. Sony needs this. Once there is an official program, it will be much easier for the nearly 40 Million PSP users to get content for. This of course, then ties back into PSN. Sony needs to make PSN its key weapon. Instead of having multiple services that are different for the PSP to the PS3 to the walkman and Bravia, have one source. Now, under a unified flag, you are able to give content to over 100 Million devices out there. This first and foremost creates an echo-system for Sony. Meaning, I can feel confident about purchasing content and knowing that I can take it between my devices and more so, ill feel safe and thus purchase more. Second, it gives Sony a great negotiating chip. Instead of saying we provide content to 14 Million users, when they go to Fox and WB and the music groups and game developers and so forth, they can now state that they command a 100 Million + users base. Then, providers will be put in a situation where they will want to give content to Sony and Sony can not only negotiate better pricing for themselves, but for their users as well that in long term, turns out better for Sony. Plus, we must not forget, Sony is a large Movie Studio and even larger Music Studio with Sony Pictures, Tri-Star, and Sony/BMG. They on their own can start this concept and have companies sign on as they see the potential.

This thought process really came to be when I was logged onto PSN and downloaded some great 1080p free content from some Sony like Sara Bareilles – Between The Lines that was of a concert she had and Incubus Look Alive. This then got me to think of the current state of the music industry. First, these concerts looked fantastic and yes they are being offered on Blu-ray but somebody might not go out and purchase a BD disc, just for that artist so why not offer first, a music tab under PSN. I mean hell Sony, your giving your content to iTunes and DRM free on Amazon, so why not your own network. But second, I believe that yes, a lot of people pirate music, so why not capitalize on the industry in other ways. Offer free videos and paid videos of these artists. Behind the scenes content and concert footage. Not only does this help promote your artists but users might be much more open to the idea of downloading a concert for their enjoyment for lets say $10 then to go purchase an entire DVD or Blu-ray. Plus, while their PSP or PS3 is on, they can just scroll to the content and start it up. Again, this is what iTunes was able to achieve, ease of use and I think Sony can offer the same and up them one if they embrace it properly.

The argument of this would be that this could eat away into their Blu-ray sales and I don’t agree with that. For me, downloading a movie is just not an option the picture and sound quality and behind the scenes content and now, more interactive content from Blu-ray Live is only offered to me on Blu-ray. But music and music video content is different and is much more casual. And also, I truly do believe that more of this content needs to be free. Why? Because it creates value where there needs to be real value and thats for the artists. Get people excited for their up coming tours, offer free Themes and Music Videos and free or lower priced concert videos. This will get fans excited and next time there is a tour near by, they will easily cash out that $60+ where the real money is.

Again, once this echo-system is in place, we can also see a much more unified marketing front for Sony or whoever else that wants their content on PSN. For example, why was there no new or exclusive content for Sony own 007: Quantum of Solace film? No front banner, theme, Alicia Keys (Sony Artist) video, behind the scenes video, press releases. Nothing. Again, if you are commanding a 14 Million + and with my vision, 100+ marketing, why would you ignore it?

Once a true structure is set for PSN, Sony has the opportunity to achieve something very unique and yet competitive with the likes of X-Box Live and iTunes and Sony dosen’t even need to look to outside providers to start this off. Sony needs to only look inward to see all the media it holds. The video store is a good start, but there is much work to be done Sony.
