Sony’s ‘Music Unlimited’ Reaches End of Line

sony_music_unlimited_ces_stage

Likely in an effort to streamline their internal operations and cut where the feature usage does not warrant the costs, Sony has announced that it’s killing its Music Unlimited program. Previously dubbed as Qriocity when it launched in 2010, the streaming service looked to tackle iTunes and other similar services like Pandora and Spotify by allowing users to stream music for a monthly fee. Come March 29th, 2015, Music Unlimited will reach end of line in the 19 countries it operates in. More details after the jump.

Sony Mobiles ‘Backup & Restore’ App Not Hacked Despite Reports

Sony_Back_And_Restore_App_Fake_Hack_1 Earlier today, news began to circulate that Sony’s Backup and Restore app on Google Play for the company’s line of Xperia devices was hacked. Appearing on Google Play and available to download for free, the app in question mimicked everything about Sony’s official app from wording to design with one obvious difference, the top part of the app was replaced with HeArT HaCkEr Group. Many took this as a sign that Sony’s internal servers had been compromised and an update had been pushed from within the company with the above changes. As Backup and Restore is an official system app from Sony, there is no way to delete the program and those who’ve given it permission will have potentially already had their information compromised.

That is, if Sony’s servers were hacked – but that’s not what happened at all.

PlayStation App to Get a Complete Redesign

PS4_PlayStation_App_iOSThe fact that the PS4 launched with a PlayStation on iOS and Android was a brilliant move by Sony that added a much needed functionality to the PS4. Simply put, typing on PS4 got a whole lot easier and the consoles experience extended beyond the need to be using it in person. You could now chat with friends, shop for games on PSN, and have all be ready by the time you got on your PS4 again. Still, there is no denying that the app itself is extremely basic in design and functionality. Seeing how fluid apps can be today, the PlayStation App mostly reminds me of how PSN was on PS3 when it first launched. Functional, but dated in its design language.

To drive that point home, the app launched on iOS device without support for Retina displays or the iPad which are fairly standard affairs. Sony would eventually update the app for iPad though Retina support is still lacking. Luckily for us, it seems that a redesign is on the way.

In a trend that current affects the mentioned phones which will likely expand to all current Xperia smartphones, Sony is separating the Contacts app from all firmware updates and instead is planning on treating as a standalone app. Sony already does this with their media apps like Walkman which was just updated to build 8.4.A.1.4. With that move, the Contacts update 16.1.B.3.2 went live as well.

After the jump, we discuss why this is an important step for Sony and what Contacts 16.1.B.3.2 brings with it.

Sony Lifelog App Preview (Video)

Sony_Lifelog_SocialAre you still confused by what Lifelog, the companion app to the Sony SmartBand can do? Luckily, Sony has put together a video that explains exactly how what the company calls a “life tracker” is able to store more than your fitness info and incorporate your social life as well. As a refresher, beyond being able to see how long you’ve slept, where you’ve been, and how the weather was during those times, Lifelog is also able to tie into your social life and tell you the number of photos you’ve taken, how much video/music you’ve consumed, and other social metrics. After the jump, the video that better explains it awaits you.

Lifelog App Expands Support for SmartBand Beyond Sony Smartphones

Sony Lifelog AppThe Lifelog app from Sony, in conjunction with the SmartBand SWR10, helps bring your daily activity to life. With an interface that Sony calls “colorful, intuitive, graphic and animated,” the Lifelog app, much like similar offerings from Fitibit helps you set goals to stay active and track your progress. Beyond activity, Lifelog also ties into your social life and displays photos and music, making it stand apart from traditional fitness devices and apps. Now, Sony is prepared to expand that experience beyond their own Smartphones.

Now let’s talk expanded devices.

PlayStation App 1.70.13 Brings Major Changes on iOS Like Native iPad Support

PlayStation_App_1_70_13The PlayStation App 1.70.13 has just been released by Sony for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad) and with it comes a host of changes. Till now, while the PlayStation App ran on iPad, it was never created natively for the larger display, resulting in an upscaled version of the iPhone app. With the most recent app update, Sony has brought native support for iPad 2 and iPad mini. This of course is still behind where Apple is with their iPad line and still doesn’t include Retina display support, which was introduced in the iPad 3 (early 2012) and the new iPad mini, but it’s a start.

After the jump, we tell you what else this 9.2 MB update brings with it.
