Sony Says Consumers Not Yet Ready To Switch To All Digital Content Gaming

The Blu-Ray is one of the PlayStation 3’s main selling point. And, as gamers, there’s something about going to the store and purchasing that physical media (disc) that gives us a sense of ownership.

With all this hulabaloo about the switch to digital content delivery and even cloud gaming, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida has finally talked about what the company thinks about the trend, and if an all-digital console is possible, in an interview with Edge.

Hit the jump for the rest of the article.

We believe, for some consumers, the time is [right], but for other consumers, the time is still not [right], Yoshida says about the timing of the digital delivery trend.

The company tried delivering an all digital-download only game platform in the PSP GO and it didn’t sell like hotcakes like they originally thought it would. Gamers still wanted to have their physical discs over digital copies.

So we believe the time is still not right to go download-only as a platform. Some PS Vita titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will be close to 4GB in size, which could be too large to download for consumers
who do not have a fast broadband connection. Also, some consumers like shopping in retail stores, talking to knowledgeable store clerks, buying and playing games on the spot. We do not want to remove that capability from consumers.

While many companies like Onlive have made their service digital delivery friendly, there will always be a place for the physical discs. Sony has recognized this and is not pushing the trend on its customers; instead, they are offering digital distribution as an alternative way for gamers to purchase their games.

As a hardcore gamer and a collector myself, I fear the day when the physical media dies off in order to make way for digital copies. And keep in mind, many countries have monthly internet download caps; just imagine your internet bill after purchasing and downloading a few PS3/PS4 copies digitally.
