The Weekend Box Office: ‘The Hunger Games’ Stays On Top, ‘Wrath of the Titans’ Makes Strong Debut

In box office results that would surprise absolutely no one, The Hunger Games remained the number one movie this past weekend, despite over a 60 percent drop off from last weekend’s record breaking performance and solid debuts from Wrath of the Titans and the Julia Roberts-led Mirror Mirror. Wrath of the Titans made somewhat of an unexpected debut at second place after a poor critical reception of the previous film, 2010’s Clash of the Titans.

The Hunger Games came in at number one again this past weekend on the strength of a $58 million second week. The aforementioned 60 percent drop is fairly typical for movies with record-breaking debuts, though the film sits behind Avatar and Spider-Man for second weekend results. According to Box Office Mojo, The Hunger Games could be on its way to a final total of about $350 million. With Easter weekend coming up, look for The Hunger Games to remain on top next weekend.

Wrath of the Titans made its debut at second place this week with $33.4 million. While only slightly above half of what Clash of the Titans made in 2010, the totals for Wrath are still impressive considering the previous film’s negative critical reception. Mirror Mirror, a fantasy title that modernizes the story of Snow White, made a fairly solid debut considering its competition, opening at third place with just over $18 million. The Julia Roberts-led film looks to remain strong next week due to the family-oriented holiday weekend.

21 Jump Street continues to do well for Sony Pictures, sitting at fourth place this week with $14.8 million. The film is quickly approaching the $100 million mark, extremely impressive for a blockbuster comedy.
