Sony Continues to Clean House, Announces Kunimasa Suzuki as Sony Mobile CEO

It’s hard to believe that Kaz Hirai has just taken over as CEO of Sony and yet under his eye, he and his small group of advisers have already started to clean house at Sony. Under a new plan called ‘One Sony’ Kaz has highlighted the three strongest pillars of Sony: digital imaging, games, and mobile. These three departments, which will be the new core of Sony, will see continued support and resources invested to further strengthen and expand them. Jack Tretton will continue to lead the PlayStation division where Kaz previously served for five years and is most credited for turning around the then-ailing division, while Michael Lynton was named CEO of Sony America which encompasses Sony Music Entertainment, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. With Kaz looking to turn his personal attention to Sony’s troubled TV business, Kunimasa Suzuki (pictured left) has been named President and CEO of Sony Mobile where Bert Nordberg previously lead.

Though Bert has been a part of the than Sony Ericsson for a long time, he was only able to take reigns of the troubled division in 2009. Under his eye, Sony would end its partnership with Ericsson and form Sony Mobile which would bring all of Sony’s mobile ambitions in house. Hirai noted that,

Bert Nordberg has done an outstanding job in transforming Sony Ericsson, now Sony Mobile Communications, from a feature phone to a smartphone company. I have enjoyed working with Bert and I would like to thank him for his vital contributions over the years, and I am glad that he will become the Board’s chairman to support Kuni and the management team of Sony Mobile Communications during these critical phases of the company’s integration with the wider Sony Group.

Despite the positive move on Sony’s end to bring all mobile operations in house and the smooth transition between the 10-year partnership with Ericsson which Bert oversaw, he’s still seen as part of the old Sony that failed to innovate while rivals Apple and Samsung have over taken the mobile market. Bert commented that,

During my years with Sony Ericsson and now Sony Mobile Communications, I’ve seen the mobile industry change at a rapid pace. We’ve shifted the company from feature phones to a smartphone company, and established Xperia™ as the Sony smartphone with consumers and operators around the world. Sony is a content, electronics and entertainment powerhouse and it has been a pleasure being part of the Sony team during both the joint venture and through the transition of becoming Sony Mobile Communications.

With Kunimasa Suzuki set to take over on May 16th, all eyes turn on him as he takes over arguably one of Sony’s most important departments and will oversee Sony’s smartphones, tablets, and computers where he will integrate and enhance the user experience across Sony’s entire product and network service line-up.” Kuni, as many call him for short, will also be in charge of the user experience, product strategy, and creative platform which will no doubt have him bring Sony’s mobile devices in closer harmony, this iOS with the Apple iPhone and iPad working pair.

Not surprisingly, Kaz had nothing but praise for the soon to be President and CEO, going to say,

He is a strong leader and the right person to oversee Sony Mobile Communications as we establish a new business structure as ‵One Sony’ intended to reinforce and accelerate our overall business management.
