PlayMemories Online, Sony’s Take on iCloud Goes Live

The idea behind iCloud is simple, to have your content automatically uploaded between devices. You took a photo on your iPhone? No problem, it’s also waiting for you on your iPad and MacBook Air. Considering the number of devices that people use on a daily bases, to be able to start work from one machine and continue it on another machine without having to do much work is not only a blessing, but almost necessity. With Sony ramping up its take on iTunes with Music and Video Unlimited, it was only a matter of time before the company also took aim at Apple’s photo sharing offerings. PlayMemories Online not only takes on iCloud, but it also isn’t limited to iOS devices and offers a few cool tricks. Details, after the jump.

PlayMemories Online was first demoed to us at CES 2012 on the PlayStation 3 where Sony announced the service. Capable of running on your Xperia or Android smartphone, Sony Tablet, iPhone/iPad or Android tablet via a free app, the service enables you to share and view your photos across all devices without having to upload and download files between each machine. Users simply need to connect their camera or camcorder to a PC or use the free app mentioned and uploaded photos to PlayMemories Online. Once completed, you can now enjoy your photos thanks to the cloud on your PC, PlayStation 3, smartphone, tablet, BRAVIA TV, or S-Frame digital photo frame.

Oh and those tricks we mentioned, are different sharing capabilities Sony allows you to do with your photos. Besides giving you the capability to email a photo, PlayMemories Online also allows for private video and photo sharing via a link sent to friends and family. This is especially great when you want to share select photos from an event. Those who want to add a bit of flavor can also select from different ‘postcard’ templates and even add a personal message which is always a great was to change things up, especially if you are sharing photos with relatives.

PlayMemories Online is now available with 5GB of free storage. We’ll hopefully have for you a video preview in the near future.
