Weekend Box Office Results: ‘Think Like a Man’ On Top Again, ‘Avengers’ Makes Huge Foreign Debut

Four fairly well-publicized movies debuted this past weekend, yet none could topple last week’s number one, Sony/Screen Gems’ Think Like a Man, which once again finished atop this weekend’s box office. Coming in second was animated feature The Pirates! Band of Misfits, giving Sony Pictures the top two movies at the domestic box office. Sony has had a lot of success from its film division this year, and this past weekend was no different.

A week ahead of its US release, Marvel’s The Avengers made a huge debut in the foreign box office, making over $178 million and finishing in first place in all of its markets, which includes England, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan, and the Philippines. According to Box Office Mojo, The Avengers debut ranks just ninth on the all-time foreign openings list; however, the film has yet to open in huge markets like China, Russia, and Japan.

With its upcoming US release, look for The Avengers to dominate next weekend’s box office results.

Think Like a Man finished on top for a second week in a row with just over $18 million. The film dropped 47 percent from last week, though in two weeks, the film is already the highest grossing film to open in April.

Debuting in second place was Sony Pictures’ The Pirates! Band of Misfits, an animated film from the England-based Aardman Animation. While not quite astonishing numbers (the film made $11.4 million), a second place showing is still solid for a film that wasn’t expected to make a huge splash.

Three other films made their debuts this week, yet none of them managed to make any waves this past weekend. Romantic-comedy The Five-Year Engagement, starring Jason Segel, debuted in fifth place, making just over $11 million, while action movies Safe and The Raven finished in sixth and seventh, each making just over $7 million. While hype for the upcoming The Avengers opening probably caused this past weekend’s underperformances, none of the movies that debuted had strong marketing efforts.

With Sony dominating this weekend and all around numbers on the lower end, look for the box office to rebound with this week’s superhuman release.
