Box Office Report: ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Swings to Huge Midweek Numbers

In this special midweek edition of the box office report, everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has had huge success in its midweek debut, which means another box office hit for Sony Pictures film studios this year. The Amazing Spider-Man debuted this past Tuesday with an estimated $7.5 million coming in from midnight release showings. The film should pick up even more steam from the July 4th holiday and will easily finish above the $150 million mark by the end of its first weekend.

While The Amazing Spider-Man has had the lowest opening day compared to the previous three films in the franchise, the $35 million opening was the highest ever for a Tuesday release, besting 2007’s Transformers. The Amazing Spider-Man has also found huge foreign success, grossing over $51 million across multiple foreign markets, even outpacing this summer’s other superhero blockbuster The Avengers in certain countries. If the movie finishes on top of this week’s domestic box office, it will mark the sixth time this year that Sony has had a number one film.

Hit the jump to check out a rundown of this past weekend’s box office results.

Finishing at number one over the weekend was the raunchy R-rated comedy Ted from Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane. The film’s $54.4 million debut was the best R-rated comedy debut of all-time, easily besting the original Hangover film and its sequel. Mark Wahlberg and his fuzzy bear companion took first place in the biggest total box office gross ever in the month of June.

Coming in at second place this weekend was another R-rated comedy in Magic Mike, the Channing Tatum starred stripper flick. The movie finished with $39.1 million. The last of the new debuts was Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection, which finished in fourth place with $25.4 million. The film rank’s fourth all-time among Tyler Perry films, though Witness Protection does mark a bit of a resurgence for the Tyler Perry brand after a few box office letdowns.

And finally, last week’s number one, Disney Pixar’s Brave finished in third place with $34 million. While the film dropped about 49 percent from last weekend, Brave is still outpacing 2011’s Cars 2 and will still most likely finish above $200 million.

Check back next week to see how Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man does at its first weekend at the box office.
