One of the neat features of the PlayStation 4 that’s been underplayed is the ability to control the console via voice commands. As you’d expect, you will need the PlayStation Camera to make this happen but once connected, the setup and usage of the system is fairly easy. While the list of commands might not be extensive yet, there is still some great features in there like easily jumping to the main menu, taking screenshots, and putting the console on standby mode. After the jump, we’ve put together a PlayStation Camera voice command list for you.

First up, after connecting the PlayStation Camera, you have to make sure that the feature is enabled. To do that, navigate to:

Settings > System > Operate PS4 with Voice

PS4 PlayStation CameraThis will automatically enable the voice command features and there is no need to teach the console your voice or commands. Once enabled, at anytime you wish to give the PS4 voice commands, simply say “PlayStation” and a command. Those include:

  • Home Screen (will take you to the main menu)
  • Take Screenshot (will take a screenshot)
  • Log-In (will give you a list of users on the console)
  • Start and then game name (will launch the given game)
  • Power (will allow you to turn off the console)
    • Enter Standby Mode
    • Turn Off PS4

So far, I’ve used voice commands in a few instances with varying noise levels, including during gameplay and have had fairly good luck with it. Best practice would be that after you say PlayStation, to pause so the system has a chance to properly listen in. Equally, for those using Remote Play with the PS Vita and PS4 Link, that voice commands will work remotely with the Vita, thanks to its built in mic.

It’s worth noting that unlike the Xbox One, the PS4 and the PlayStation Camera is not listening to you while the system is off or in standby mode which means that you cannot turn on the console via voice.
