Have you ever wanted to back up a small amount of files but thought having an external hard drive is too cumbersome? You probably have if you have a laptop and luckily, Sony has a solution for you. That’s because the company’s new Backup SD Card adds automatic back-up capabilities which makes it capable of backing up your files every time it’s inserted into the PC, eliminating the need for an external hard drive and doesn’t rely on you remembering to do the task. So let’s talk details about the Sony Backup SD Card.

Viviano Cantu, director of consumer media marketing for Sony Electronics:

Everyone wants their personal content and memories safely preserved and archived, but people usually put off data back-up because it involves extra steps like plugging in other devices and organizing the files into different folders. Those extra steps are gone. As soon as you put the card into your PC to view your files, the backup process begins and it’s done so you don’t have to worry about it.

Like a traditional SD card, these new Backup SD cards can be used between all devices like a digital camera and camcorder. What makes them special is the automated backup software that’s included. The software allows you to select specific folders and scans for changes every time your SD card is plugged it and automatically starts making back-up copies, with marks showing During backup or Backup completed displayed on the file icons to let users easily see the status of the backup.

While this will not be an ideal situation for those who have large amounts of files, due to their smaller capacities compared to an external hard drive, the drives do offer an interesting solution for businessmen and those who have some more sensitive data to protect. That’s because the backup software also allows for AES 256-bit file encryption, so copies of important files “can’t be opened or seen by others even if the card is removed from the slot.”

While a lack of Mac support is not a surprise, Sony has been generous with its legacy PC support which span:

  • Windows XP (SP3 or later)
  • Windows Vista (SP2 or later)
  • Windows 7 (SP1or later)
  • Windows 8

Said to be available in the coming months, the Sony’s Backup SD Card will come in three sizes which include:

  • SNBA16 (16GB) – $27.99
  • SNBA32 (32GB) – $52.99
  • SNBA64 (64GB) – $99.99

Do you see a market for such a product or due to their size, is the backup solution too limiting?
