As expected, the Sony Xperia Z2 has been unveiled at the 2014 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. With the Xperia Z1 now one month old, Sony has followed a pattern set nearly two years ago of releasing a new flagship device every six months. This means that while the Xperia Z2 is built on the groundwork that the Xperia Z and Xperia Z1 have setup, there is still plenty of new things to love.

So what does the Sony Xperia Z2 have to offer? Lets talk specs and details, after the jump.

Sony_Xperia_Z2_Official_00As you’d expect from any flagship device, the Sony Xperia Z2 pack some of the latest technology around. Some highlights of the Xperia Z2 include:

  •  5.2-inch full HD (1080p) Triluminos Display
  • 2.3 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 801
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16GB of Internal Storage
  • microSD Support
  • 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS
  • 2.2-megapixel Front Facing Camera
  • 4K Video Recording
  • Wi-Fi
  • NFC
  • 4G LTE
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • 3,200mAh Battery

Like its predecessor, the Xperia Z2 offers IP58 waterproof certification which encases the smartphones display in an one-piece aluminum housing, creating with it a very high end finish. While a more robust processor and 4K video will surely be highlights of the device, Sony has worked hard at further improving its display technology.

Sony_Xperia_Z2_Official_09To that end, Sony enlisted the help of its Bravia division to better optimize the massive 5.2 Triluminos display. The result is what Sony calls Live Color LED which brings with it brighter and more vibrant colors. While the screen itself is limited to 1080p, the Xperia Z2 can capture video in 4K 30fps, which can be played back on any 4K television though I’m sure Sony wouldn’t mind if it was a Sony Bravia. So while you might not get the full 4K experience when viewing back your 4K footage, it means that between the extra resolution and Triluminos display, you can easily zoom in on your footage and view the incredible detail.

Those opting for traditional 1080p will be able to happily capture at 60fps. Sony is also providing their Timeshift videos for free which allows for 720p 120fps video capture, allowing for stunning slow motion video. Sony is forgetting about the audiophiles and travelers out there either with built-in digital noise canceling algorithms. As a thank you, Sony will also include their MDR-NC31EM headphones on launch day.

While no price point has been announced yet, the Sony Xperia Z2 will launch globally in March. It’s still unclear if the US is part of that global vision.
