Major Update Headed to Sony’s Alpha 7 and 7R

Sony has announced that a major firmware updated is headed to the Alpha 7 and Alpha 7R. For those in need of a quick recap, the Sony Alpha 7 and 7R are part of the company’s new compact fleet of full-frame mirrorless cameras which pack up to a 36.3-megapixel image sensor. In addition to typical bug fixes, the update will also address many issues that the community has had with the camera since its release late in late 2013. So what exactly is Sony looking to address and enhance? Let’s talk, after the jump.

According to Sony, the update will help improve the cameras’ slow startup time. Many early adopters of the camera have complained about slow start speeds when the camera is fully turned off. Sony is also looking to address the cameras’ poor JPEG image quality. While both cameras are capable of outputting in RAW with crisp quality, it seems that JPEG pictures leave something to be desired which will now be addressed. The update will also bring with it more remote capabilities between the cameras and your iOS or Android smartphone via the PlayMemories Mobile app, and better support for a recent 70-200mm telephoto lens.

Sony hopes to have the update rolling out by March 19th.
