By May, PS4 to Have 38 Titles vs. 15 on Xbox One

E3 Iron Man PS4 Xbox OneThere is little doubt that the PlayStation 4 is commanding a huge lead on the Xbox One. Since their respective launches, the Sony-backed console has sold 7 million units while the 3rd gaming console from Microsoft has only sold 5 million. Even that 5 million number seems to be inflating things for the Xbox One since those are units shipped and not actually sold to consumers versus the number that Sony has released which is units sold. To keep things simple, even if we go with the 7 million vs. 5 million number, we can see that consumers are voting with their wallets and they’re choosing the PS4.

One reason is the $100 price different between the console though Microsoft has done a sneaky price drop on the Xbox One Titanfall bundle with a $499 price point. You can either see that as MS is offering Titalfall for free or cutting the price of the Xbox One by $60. Either way you look at it, MS is eating $60 to make the Xbox One more attractive to consumers. Beyond the price difference between the two consoles, consumers are also opting for the PS4 due to the huge library of games it commands over the Xbox One and that list is likely to only grow.

Thanks to Deadpixel over at NeoGAF, the chart below shows the number of games that have been released on each console from the start of 2014 until May and it’s quite striking. In its simplest form, the PS4 owners will have 38 titles to choose from (and this number excludes any title launched prior to 2014 which means all launch games like Battlefield, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, etc.) while Xbox One owners have a pick of 15. The situation is a bit worse for Xbox One owners when you look at specific numbers like March where the PS4 gains 10 titles versus the 2 of the Xbox One, or April, where the PS4 again leads with 15 titles versus the 5 on Xbox One.

For its part, Microsoft has promised a big year at E3 and Sony has seen some troubles internally with the cancelation of the Stig-led game at Santa Monica Studios, which was set to be unveiled as a AAA title for Sony at E3. Still, if Sony has proven one thing, it’s that AAA titles aren’t the only games that sell consoles as the PS4 continues to have the overwhelming support of the indie developers.

Do you think Microsoft will be able to turn things around in the near future with the Xbox One or will the PS4 continue to dominate?
